Yes. It is said directly when they are first seen in PoTZ that they will kill you if you touch them.

I plan to have the player visit the Creepy Keep as well in Operation Mecha as one of the revisit levels. (Ethier Adventure #7 or #8.)
Plus, I bet you can't guess what the player finds out about the Mechanizer in Adventure #6...
