The Rules + Other Information (***READ BEFORE POSTING***)

Post by Midnight Synergy » Tue Oct 26, 2010 11:18 pm

Welcome to the Off-Topic section of the Wonderland forum. Please read this post in its entirety before posting in this section.

The Wonderland community used to have a non-moderated Off-Topic area, but over time it became infested with spam, nonsense posts, and generally too many posts of little quality.

Instead of deleting the entire area of the forum, this new section has been created as an experiment in a moderated environment. Please post responsibly: your own posting behaviour in this section could determine whether or not this area of the forum will continue to exist.

Note: All site rules apply to this forum.

1. This topic is for posts not related to Wonderland - but not for spam!
Examples of "good" topics: Discussion of other games, discussion of movies/music, your own home-made projects, interesting puzzles, etc.

Examples of "bad" topics: forum games, political/heated discussions, nonsense posts or posts with no clear point, repeated questions, etc.

2. Always look for an existing similar topic first, before creating a new topic.

We don't want to see individual topics about every movie you wish to discuss. A single "movie" discussion post is sufficient.

If you want to discuss a specific game, e.g. Super Mario 64, then a single thread for this game is fine. However, if you start posting about five or ten different games you wish to discuss, that is considered too much. Pick a game that you think many others will be interested in.

3. This topic area is moderated!

Moderators have permission/power to move/lock posts as they see fit. They are doing this to help keep the off-topic area alive and well, and they are doing this as volunteers. Please do not get into arguments with them ("why did you delete my post???") - consider them your friends and partners in keeping this part of the forum going, and help wherever you can.

If you feel that a moderator has targeted your posts too often (and not just after two or three posts), you can PM Midnight Synergy and ask for advice/opinion.

Important: Moderators will be able to see your e-mail address that you used to register your account, as well as the IP address from which you are posting. They are instructed to ignore this information - not that they really could do anything with it - but information is given to you in the interest of full disclosure.

If you are uncomfortable with any of the above, please do not post in this area. (Moderators cannot see this information in other areas).

EDIT ON 28/12/2010 by tyteen4a03
1. Moderators deal with every case on a case-by-case basis, so if others did the same thing as you, it does not necessarily mean you can do it. Always check the rules, and if in doubt, ask a mod.
2. Mods do have a life and may overlook posts. Please help us by trying to help report suspicious posts by PM.

EDIT 04/02/2011 - Qloof234
Merging some of the stickied threads into just one topic for convenience's sake.

EDIT 04/03/2015 by tyteen4a03
Removing point 4 about this being an experiment; other temporary measures

EDIT 29/11/2016 by tyteen4a03
Add mention to site rules

Okay. Let's go.

Recently, I've noticed the amount of spam in the new off-topic area rising, even with moderation in place. As a result, I've taken it upon myself to undergo the following task.

From now on, when you are making a new topic or post, you would do well to check it over three times. Why three and not only twice? Here's why:

First; To make sure that you didn't misspell anything so it's still legible
Second; To make sure that it's entirely appropriate for the forum
Third, and most importantly; To make sure that it is absolutely, completely, certainly not spam.

Just so we already know how this works:

If your post does not meet the first requirement, then it's nothing to worry about as long as it's still comprehensible.

If your post does not meet the second requirement, then I will step in and edit out the inappropriate sections of it.

If your post does not meet the third requirement, then if it is a post it will be deleted, and if it is a topic it will be locked/deleted.

Under the circumstances that either of the second options should take place, do not make another post asking why it was done, as it will be locked or deleted as well. Instead, PM me about it. As Sonic Retro's ruleset puts it quite well; "Any 'test' or 'experiment' on the boundary of the rules will be considered as a consented gambling on your membership - Don't complain to us if you lose, and don't complain to us if someone else wins either."

That is all.

I have noticed an increase of self-made games. Some are really good, while some topics does not have much information about the game, so I made a set of rules. Please follow these rules:

1. If you are starting a new game project, please provide sufficient information about this new game. It doesn't have to be screenshots - plots, trailers, ideas, features, etc. are all OK. Topic with just "I am making a new game." with no or little additional information will be considered as spam and will be locked/deleted.

2. If you are releasing a demo, please make sure it does not come with any viruses/malicious code. Anyone found releasing such programs intentionally will be banned, and have the program deleted from the forum. Also, please try your best to make sure there are no security loopholes - if you need assistance please PM a mod and we will be happy to help out. Do notice that the users and the mods trust you, the rules are here just for extra security.

3. Please make sure you are not using copyrighted materials. We don't want anyone to be caught violating the copyright laws (although honestly we hate copyright too). We are not responsible for your content - you do, so please try to confirm that all your content are either original or are authorized to be distributed.

4. If you are making a Wonderland Fangame, please read the following:
Original Post: http://pcpuzzle.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=97826#97826
Midnight Synergy wrote:I have no problem with you making a Wonderland fangame, as long as a few rules are followed:

a) no 'official' (and hence copyrighted) material is used (official graphics, sound fx, music, copies of gameplay mechanics)
b) the game is not distributed other than on this forum or on a wonderland fan site (e.g. mette's site)
c) the title screen includes the remark that the game is not "official" and hence Midnight Syngery has no responsibility for its content.
d) the spirit of the game doesn't deviate too far from the official Wonderland games (e.g. a violent shoot-em-up where Stinky and Loof battle hordes of Zombies would not be ok)

Hopefully you'll find that these are reasonable (and not too restrictive) requests.

Cheers,
Patrick
Unless with explicit permission from Midnight Synergy. All Wonderland smiles are made by popo, please ask her if you would like to include those smiles in your game.

We do enjoy your games, keep the games coming guys! ;)

As you all know, only the off-topic area allows the creation of polls. Users often want to open polls in other sections as well, however due to the forum policy MS did not open this functionality, users cannot benefit from this feature.

From now on, you may open polls that are about Wonderland in the off-topic area. The moderators will move the topic as we see fit, though you may speed up this process by PMing one of the moderators. You may also specify which forum you want the topic moved to in the PM, but if you don't the moderators will decide for you.

However, because the reason behind the no-poll policy was because of the possible spam, the moderators will consider how well the poll contributes to the forum before moving it to the other parts of the forum (i.e asking WHICH STINKER IS BEST probably will only fall into the spam category and will be deleted) There is no guarantee that your poll will be moved. It could stay in the off-topic section, or even deleted/locked.

We hope this policy change will benefit users and encourage discussion.

This notice was previously in effect:
A user that goes by the name Caton, Toony, PowerStar, MegaStar (and possibly others) is currently banned. He may have evaded the ban, but he is still, in fact, banned.

All posts by this user in the Off-Topic section will be removed. Please ignore all posts made by this user.

This policy will be updated as the user's ban status changes.

tyteen4a03
Patrick has since rescinded the ban, however, all users should still be aware of Caton's previous actions.

Patrick has expanded the area of moderation to Meet and Greet and General Wonderland Discussions.

We are currently discussing about merging the rules of Off-topic and the rules of the two new areas into one. During this period, please use your common sense and adhere to any guidelines and best practices we have posted.

I would also like to remind you that:
1. Strong profanity (PM us if you really need a list) are not allowed in any circumstances. Avoid even the lighter profanity at all cases; remember both adults and kids will be able to see your post.
2. Do not feed the trolls.

That's all, and I hope this will be the last reminder we need.

Lately we have noticed a significant increase in flamewars between some members. I'd like to remind everybody that if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all.

Also, please do not feed the trolls.

The site rules have been updated. There are no changes to the rules themselves, however we've reworded the rules a bit to make them more concise. The new rules will come into effect on all forums immediately.

If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to ask here.
