Welcome to the New Off-Topic... What just happened?

Post by Midnight Synergy » Tue Oct 26, 2010 11:24 pm

This may come as a shock to some, but you will see that the "old" Off-Topic area has been locked (but is still viewable) and replaced with the "new and moderated" Off-Topic area.

Please read the rules post carefully. I consider this an experimental and transitional phase of the Off-Topic area, and the direction that it takes very much relies on the quality of posting around here.

Old posts from the old section may be moved to the new section withing a a few days. I assume something like Wefight will be the first to move. Please be patient if you don't have access to your favourite threads for a little while, I wish to see how things move and work before doing too much more.

This is a blank slate, and it's here for you to fill. So as you're starting new topics, be very selective about the type of threads that you think will make for a rich, friendly, fun environment.

And don't bite the moderator(s). Remember, they are here to help, so that you can keep an Off-Topic area.

This is revolutionary! :D

I like it. Moving old approved topics in and keep spammy topics out. :)

Oh, and I just noticed you can't edit posts here. Perhaps you should fix that?

We don't want people making terrible typos that have different meanings than intended.

At first, I was confused at why I couldn't post... then I was stunned when I realised that the sub-forum was locked... but now I think that it's a GREAT idea! :D

I just hope that this can last, experiment or not.

On the other hand, Kooky; Perhaps it will make people read again, and think about it, before pressing the "submit" button.

This will hopefully (and probably will be) be a big improvement, the only thing that could be improved is that editing would be nice. Other than that this looks awesome. :D

Also congratulations Qloof! :D

No editing at this point. There will be some topics that will be set up wrong (e.g. the first poll posted so far), but they can be locked/deleted/restarted. As Marinus said, I want people to take the extra time to think about their post before just firing off responses left/right/centre.

(Deeman, do you think your post makes any sense to most people? It certainly doesn't to me.)

1. What about the topics for games made by memebrs (Not forum games, but games such as Kooky's Game based on wefight and my own "Adventures Of dancing duck")? Those games depend on updating the title to be accurate.
2. That was just a quote of a skype conversation where everyone was making fun of how you can't edit your posts.

Why? People who would like to read the topic can "watch" it so they get a notification email. Then they go directly to the newest posts, no matter if the title has changed or not.

I don't like getting emails like this just to notify me that new posts have been made. I just check the titles and go on.

It's only a short time since this new subforum exists. But so far I think you do a good job. :)

ok now I'm starting to dislike the off-topic section because we can't edit our posts. And it feels heavy for me.

Did you already try the "preview" button, then read you post carefully until you're sure that it's OK, and then finally click the "submit" button?

Again, with updates and stuff it's common for people to edit the first post with updates or change their mind. They can't do that now.
