What does the emulator box do?

That is the devkit that connects your pc and can output to pc monitors\tv's and it can debug the game source code.
It can send the game right to the Nintendo DS and you use the DS game controller to play your game on.

History and media conservation, I also imagine that the Switch is harder to make for because of newer things having more restrictions and complexity.

Switch don't do a lot of the things the DS can do.
DS you have two screens, ds download play multiplayer, two cpu's, sprite engine and 3d engine, etc.
still possible to make new DS cartidge to this day, so no I say not obsolete I also do GameCube\Wii gamedev I have devkit hardware

Website isn't working for me either. rip. this is a cool project though! I'd love to play it on DS one day! It's lovely seeing, though not as bumbling as before, the community is still active!
