Help! I lost my player file

Post by mette » Sat Oct 22, 2005 4:09 pm

Something strange has happened in Wonderland :?

On my home computer I used to have two player files: "Mette" and "Bjarne". When the levels for Small World II was released I was playing on another computer so I created two new player files: "SWIIMette" and "SWIIBjarne". I copied the new player files to my home computer so my home computer had four player files in total. First Bjarne went to play the contest levels and used player "SWIIBjarne". He made progress but when he finished playing, he noticed that the player file "SWIIBjarne" had not been updated, but the player file "Bjarne" had been reset to only have completed the 20 Small World levels (no regular levels or any other custom levels). We thought that was very strange indeed. Today the same thing happened with "SWIIMette" and "Mette".

Is there any way I can get my old player files ("Mette" and "Bjarne") back?

3. I've deleted my Player Character!!!
--------------------------------------
Don't panic. If a player character is deleted, a backup
copy is stored in the Players directory with the .bak
extension. Simply rename "playername.bak" to
"playername.pla", and off you go!

This is from the readme file in the RTWD directory. But........
I looked at my player file and the only .bak file is jordan.bak...none for me. Good Luck!

This probably occured because the new files contain the same names. Perhaps you should have named them SWIIM and SWIIB instead. Try deleting the new files or renaming them to Mette and Bjarne and see if the scores come back. :?

Thanks for trying to help, but nothing works
I have no .bak files at all in my player folder. I tried deleting the new player files, but that didn't change the scores back on my old player files.

I guess I'll have to live without my old score  It's not the end of the world, but it's annoying

Thanks again :D

Help! I lost my player file

Post by momtopetsonly » Sun Oct 23, 2005 8:11 am

Hi,
I am not computer literate by any means, but when I had a problem a friend had me go to restore and pick the date to restore what had been lost. Would that same principle apply with this situation?
Feeling sorry for lost scores, :? :(

There is a topic on this board called "Help Please!!!" This sounds like a similar problem to yours.

Anyway, in that thread, Bearsland wrote
I must have to tell people this at least 10 times a week.

System Restore monitors changes to the Windows Registry, Critical System files and other files with certain extensions.

It is not a backup program. It does not backup all the files on the computer.

It is not a universal cure-all for all Windows XP problems.

It will not make previously deleted personal files 'magically' reappear. If you have deleted a file in a personal folder, (e.g. a custom level, Word doc in My Documents), running System Restore will not bring it back.

If a personal file is deleted and the Recycle Bin is emptied, the only way to get the file back is to use a specialist 'undelete' file restore program.
