New Level(Advanced)-popo says

Post by janetgalle » Sun Jul 11, 2004 7:41 pm

All righty then........If you have downloaded LinkynStoofs "Liberty" and "Pumpkin" objects, and popos "Barn" you should be able to see them in this level...I think  ...I hope.

Enjoy,

jg

If you haven't downloaded them go to custom content and find them there.
Or, you can still play the level, but it will look strange........

I of course have to take a look and see.

Very nice look! I never expected anyone to use Lady Liberty and the pumpkin on the same level, but you pull it off well.

And you're so sneaky, twice I thought surely this level is impossible, and then eventually found what I missed (although I did succumb to peaking at the level editor at one point).

Note for those who wants to see the level the way it's intended:

1) download Popo's barn from the forums, no problem here
2) create a subfolder under CustomModels named SEE
3) create or find a temporary folder for the next 2 steps
4) download the Liberty model into your temporary folder, extract its "model1.3ds" into the temporary folder, and copy it into SEE
5) download the pumpkin model into your temporary folder, extract its "model1.3ds" into the temporary folder, rename it to "model2.3ds", and copy it into SEE

Hope this helps.

Yes, this is where it starts to get complicated.

If you want to use two models that are in different folders in a level you have to make another folder with both the models in it and give it another unique name, then tell the editor to use this folder.

Before long the DRTW folder will be gigabytes big.

PS. Why didn't Janet tell us what folder to create to see this level properly? Not a criticism, just curious. :D

PPS. I haven't had a look at it yet, get back to you on that one.

You're tellin' me!!!! I had myself a devil ( ) of a time getting all the custom items together in one level!

Sorry  I guess I should have realized that with all the moving, renaming, new folders.etc., that I had to create to make the level, that you would have to do the same thing. . I thought that once you had downloaded all the items, you could just see them, not realizing that you all have to do all that stuff too.

Still learning. I think alot of people are not going to bother, or just won't be able to figure it out. I know I am certainly in over my head with alot of this zipping and renaming and AAARRRRGGGGGG!!!!!!!

jg

SnL did a good job of explaining it.

It all helps to keep your brain alert, Janet. Though it can cause severe hair loss.

Truly a fun level, jg. :D I kept expecting the Roaming Gnome to pop up somewhere! After LNS's post I was able to see all the models. Thanks for the really clear instructions, LNS. Between the two of you, we are making real progress towards understanding models. BRAVO! and thanks. :D

Perhaps in the future, anyone who posts levels using custom houses and models should also post (in the same post with the level) zip files containing all the custom stuff used, pre-named to the right names ("house1", "model1", etc.) and pre-placed in folders with the right names (ie. the folder names expected by the level), so that people can just download and unzip the stuff into their CustomHouses and CustomModels directories instead of having to manually do the tedious copying and renaming.

Yes, it'll waste space on both the forums and on your hard disk because you could easily end up with duplicates in different folders (or different posts/forums in the case of this board), but disk space is plenty cheap nowadays anyway, you could do far worse with a couple of MP3s.

Very nice. Janet you are continuing to blaze some trails for us. I agree with LNS. It would ease things to create the zip with the correct names and the correct file folder already in it. Most zip files will allow you to set the option so that when you unzip it will create the correct subfolders.

Heya,

two quick points...

One - the current system of using custom models isn't the most elegant, I admit. ;) The intention of the system was that someone would make a pack of four theme models (e.g. four haunted house related models) into a custom folder called e.g. "hauntedSLDKFJ", then others would use the same model-set to make their own haunted house models. I must admit, I never thought people would download and post invidiual models just for the fun of it, and then have other people mix and match those models. Who knew that the statue of liberty and a halloween pumpkin would make sense together! In that situation, yes - I agree it would be best if you simply post a zip of the directory with all the needed files along with your level, or post step by step instructions as Linky did as to how to assemble your custom model needs.

Two - please do be careful what you post, make sure it's free to use and free to post, and if necessary give sources, authors, acknowledgements, etc, as might be the case.

Yeah, I didn't expect it either, but janetgalle did a real good job with that level. 8)

Still, because custom models take soooo much more time to either find on the Internet or create yourself, I just couldn't wait until I have 4 objects of the same theme before posting. I most likely will be posting models here individually and let others mix and match as necessary. If you have models you like to use in your own levels but have trouble assembling them into the right folder etc. you can PM me or post here and I'll try to help.

P.S. and don't worry, I do make an effort to check both the website and the files I downloaded that there are no written restrictions on redistribution, before re-posting them here
