Diversion Tactics II: Lingering Reflections
Diversion Tactics II: Lingering Reflections
Here's a slight variation on StinkyNLoof's brilliant Diversionary Tactics (from the Small World series), altered just enough so that none of the published solutions work. The new solution requires what I think is another new gameplay element. Hope you enjoy it!

Oh THANKS Davimad! Now I HAVE to finish it to see what you mean - I have TOO MANY OTHER NEW LEVELS to get through! This week has been amazing - it seems we've been bombarded with new levels, one after the other! Oh well, "a woman's work is never done." Ho HumI was so pleased to get through it.
Now! You have me flummoxed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OBVIOUSLY, I misunderstood what you meant! I thought you meant you had finished THIS one, when you meant you had finished the FIRST one!!! Anyway, I've tried this one and just became extremely frustrated! Not sure what to do here! HELP!majic1 wrote:Oh THANKS Davimad! LNS posted the brilliant Diversionary Tactics level for the competition way back and I was so proud of myself for beating it, but this new version has me totally beaten. I just don't see how to divert attention from Loof long enough. I can't think what the new gameplay element could be, and since I'm not a level author, I doubt it's going to be something I'll just guess. So there you go, I'm human.

Well, it can be done.majic1 wrote:I think I'm leaving this alone until I know OB has figured it out - don't want to frustrate myself unless it can actually be done!!

Glad you liked my Small World level David. Your variation was interesting and thoughtful, and I have to admit it would've had stumped me if you had released the level a few weeks earlier, but now...see spoiler near end of post (it won't be of much help to everyone else, but Old Bear must not read it!

So it "only" took about an hour for me to successfully complete......

SPOILER
Old Bear seemed to have forgotten about that trick he did on my "Reflecting on Reflectors" level. That was the "new game element" David was talking about.
It's a funny old world we live in right enough. Especially when you see what I posted earlier:LinkyNStoof wrote:Old Bear seemed to have forgotten about that trick he did on my "Reflecting on Reflectors" level. That was the "new game element" David was talking about.
My fault, of courseI can't think what the new gameplay element could be, and since I'm not a level author, I doubt it's going to be something I'll just guess.

Because of David saying,
I'm trying to find an untried solution instead of using one I/we already know. The new solution requires what I think is another new gameplay element.
I would never even have tried the 'moving reflector' trick here. I was too blinded by the original solution and by the above 'false', (since it's not a 'new gameplay element'), clue.
Clever stuff David and LNS. It's still one of the best puzzles ever posted.

Thanks... and a hint
Thanks for the comments - this is my first level, and I have to admit it's nice to hear about people trying it - especially LNS! Maybe I will try to put together something original (though the field seems crowded now). And sorry I confused you, Bearsland - I didn't see the exchange between you and LNS before now, and you're right: you did have this basic idea first.
Anyway, Davimad asked for a hint, and said:
Anyway, Davimad asked for a hint, and said:
Actually, you don't have to get the reflector on the ice at all. You just need to get it to the small platform containing the box. And once you get it there (and have all the coins except the one behind the box), it really doesn't need to linger there long; just long enough to get what you want...I need the boxes to get the reflector on the ice right?
Re: Thanks... and a hint
Hey, no apology necessary, my friend. You did good here.David wrote:And sorry I confused you, Bearsland - I didn't see the exchange between you and LNS before now, and you're right: you did have this basic idea first.

And I make no claim to the idea, I had seen DiscGolfer use it before. As I said, I blinded myself. I then kicked myself when LNS made his post. What is interesting is that this was never tried with the original; most probably because there was a more obvious solution at the time.
I'll look forward to when you start posting your own levels; your alteration of this level was great. Go for it!

Hi, as if my original level wasn't tricky enough, David put a twist to it and make it even harder.
David's level requires either good timing or patience, whichever one you have more of.
You can still use the diversionary tactic, but only for the area with the bonus coins (which also has a rainbow coin now so you're forced to get to the bonus coins unlike my original level).
The basic idea is to get the reflector to the position right below the teleport on Loof's starting platform, as shown in the attached screenshot. Then here's the tricky part: if you push the reflector up into the teleport at a particular right moment, a fireball will hit the reflector just as the reflector is fully on the tile where the teleporter is, but just before the reflector gets teleported to the other side. This will cause that single fireball to be deflected into the wooden box at the left as desired. This is the so-called "lingering reflection" David's referring to, because the fireball's reflected at the brief moment when the reflector is "lingering" right on the teleport before disappearing to the other platform.
I can't describe to you how the timing works, I always have to try a number of times myself. Also, because the reflector disappears to the other platform whether your attempt is successful or not, make sure to get out of the way immediately after pushing the reflector into the teleport, or you' be fried in no time. If the timing doesn't work out, you should be able to retrieve the reflector back from the other side, so you can repeat this as many times as necessary until it finally works, or until you run out of patience.
As for using the teleport, keep this in mind:
For the teleport on Loof's starting platform:
1) it's only safe to enter it from the right or from the left
2) to go across between the left side and right side of this platform, make sure you walk down as far away from the UFO before moving across
For the teleport on the other platform (the one where you get your reflector):
1) it's safe to enter it from the right, the left, or above, but NOT from below
2) if you enter it from above, you'll emerge out of the teleporter on Loof's starting platform right in the UFO's line of sight, so immediately move to the left or right to avoid getting fried
Hope this helps. I'm happy to answer questions about other parts of the level as well if necessary. Good luck.

I am at a loss...I tried to do the reflector thing and I can not seem to get the timing down...
I have incredible patience but this is really testing my nerves
I might have to leave this one for a while and try some other difficult levels.
I understand the concept of the reflector but I must be a complete spazola because I can not get it right...ARGHHH

Same here except I do not usually have too much patience
And I never really knew what to do with those boxes either
