Trampolines?

I don't get how to use the trampolines to go anyway but straight ahead. There was a sign that said you could steer in mid-air, but I can't seem to do it. Any tips?

After you jump, hold the neccessary arrow key in mid-air, before you land. When you land, you will change your direction.
