April fools and rools

April fool's day is over, so... yeah.
I agree, too much spam and hexadeciple posts are not appreciated, not even on the first of April.
Actually I don't like those 1 April stuff; one of the reasons is that my mother died on 1 April a few years ago. But that will definitely not be a reason that other people may not have april-fool-fun, don't worry.
But, another question, which has actually nothing to do with april fools, but more with rools, How about the rool about avatars, signatures (sizes of pictures) and such:

I agree with that message too. I think I also agree to the fact that tyteen shouldn't really be putting in an avatar and sig picture that is larger than my picture for my WA project earlier. Qloof does the same thing but I don't really know since the sig picture expands the page just a bit.
And PS I'm sorry to know that your mother died yesterday

Me too. Not much more I can say, except R.I.P.

Thanks Technos, but don't worry, it was not yesterday, but yesterday 2 years ago.

Yes, MS needs to figure out a clearer rule about sig pics and such, because there is a grey zone about it and different people have different ideas about what is 'big' and what is not.
Also, I let the rules loosen up a bit because it is April Fool's day. Rules are dead, people are alive. Loosen the rules for just 1 day is okay IMO.
About the sig pic: I will go talk to MS, but for now, I am resizing it.
ps: r.i.p

Well the rules don't say about flashing pictures, (as said before) and that's not what this is about, but I think they are perfectly clear about the
size of avatar and signature.

Translated in my own words, Patrick wrote:1 picture of 120 (either in avatar or signature) + 1 line text,

3 lines text.
Patrick also made the comparison with a driver who goes 60 kph where only 50 is allowed, that the police usually will not make a big problem of it, but it always happen that people try to shift the limit, to see how far they can go. I did not check the exact sizes of your pictures, but I guess you were going almost 200 kph before, and now still about 100.
Also, in my opinion, police / moderators do have an example-function.
Anyhow, thanks for resizing the picture; it's not really very bothering me now.

Oh. Then my big add for NFW needs to go somewhere else.
Wait, did I end up shortening it?
PS, R.I.P.

Original post:

Midnight Synergy wrote:The main point of the original rule was (a) download speed and (b) readability of posts. Point (a) applies less these days (although many folks - especially international - are still on dial-up), but point (b) is still important to me. Large signatures, very flashy images and avatars, are just plain distracting and ugly. My sizing restriction is tough, but my feeling was that I should be stricter with the official rule and let by some minor deviations (like a police officer not stopping someone doing 58km/h in a 50km/h zone).
So... the point remains to please keep avatars/signatures as small as possible. If someone uses 4 lines of text instead of 3 (or whatever), I really don't care. I do (and have asked for removal) if someone puts tons of quotes in or very large or very flashy images.
(BTW, I meant to also post a second topic with a suggestion on how to deal with the larger problem of the general quality of the off-topic forum, but as usual it got late and I'm tired - I'll try again tomorrow).
What is small or not is a personal opinion. I find it ok to have a sig image, a few lines and an avatar but some people may find it annoying to have so many images and avatars (slows down browsing, I guess?) But yes, if somebody requests you to slice it down, you probably should.
I have started a topic in the mod forum which discusses such thing. Except a poll coming up this week (if Patrick comes at the right time for tea

)

Lots of things in the rules are based on personal opinion, and are not strictly to describe, such as: be polite, and watch your language while there are younger children. The sizes of avatars and signatures however are, up to a certain point, strictly to describe, and they are described in the rules themselves (though not in Patrick's post, we were talking about.)
BTW, I gave you 60 kph, but Patrick only 58
The reason that I find too many / too big pictures annoying is not that they slow down browsing, but they take space from the things what this forum really is for: the content of the posts. If you want to watch TV, watch a movie, read a book, a paper, listen to the radio, then
that is what you want to see or hear,
not everytime the same annoying advertisements again....

After you resized your picture, it's still perfectly clear visible that the Midnight Post is coming soon, (I hope it will be very soon, then you can remove the picture

) and it still would be, even if it was smaller.
About your discussion on the Mod-forum I don't have much hope. I know the three of you all like big pictures, so it will be 3 against 1. And you know my opinion about polls.

OH MY GOD YOU SEE THROUGH OUR PLANS *killed*
But please consider the weighted mean: 1 for mod, 10 for admins. :P
