Autism, What is it?

Post by Technos72 » Fri Jun 24, 2011 6:36 pm

Autism (ASD) is a type of disabillity that some people get when they're born. It affects the brain making the person act a bit odd and think differently than others. Some ASD's tend to think less than the average, other ASD's can even think better than the average, like Albert Einstein for his E=MC squared formula, Bill Gates for his Microsoft computers, and Satoshi Tajiri, the guy to made Pokemon. Yes they all have ASD. I don't really remember, but people with autism who perform good things impress many people.

Truth is, about what I was hiding in my confession topic. I have autism, period

I don't know how old are you, but the older you get, the more life experience you get... and then the symptoms usually become less severe.

One day you will notice... although it's still there... it doesn't bother you as much, if at all.

I believe that Marinus has said that he himself is mildly autistic (correct me if I'm wrong) and yet he is awesome and it's always fun to talk with him. I believe that you will have no problems understanding each other.
Rest in peace, Kym. I hardly knew ya.
Rest in peace, Marinus. A bright star, you were ahead of me on my own tracks of thought. I miss you.

I saw some pictures by a person like that and is very impressive how they can draw or make something.

Today I saw a documentary on Discovery Channel about brain's functions and They made an experiment to block the left hemisphere of brain(responsible for complex functions like logic or consciousness),to force the brain to use the right hemisphere (responsible for imagination and other creative functions)
They tested the subject before and after.
Before:
1.He need to guess how much dots appear on a monitor.
Guess 0/3 times
2.He need to draw a horse
Was a horrible picture(a 4 years old child can do better)

After:
Guessed 2/3 times
And Made a better horse, like an artist.

Sometimes an affected brain works better than a normal.

Don't think the Autism is a really bad thing.
The normal is boring, different is awesome!

joszefkoma, don't forget there are good reasons for all parts in the brain to exist. However, to not impair the person further, evolution has made it so that after being somehow damaged in one area, the brain overcompensates in other areas.

Don't worry!
The effect disappear in 15 minutes. After that the person was normal again!

If you search on internet, there are lots of things written about autism. However, I think it's not possible to give an exact definition. You can make a list op autistic properties, then probably 99% of all people in the world have at least 1% of those properties, but they are not called autistic. Perhaps if people have 50% or 70% of those autistic properties, then they might call those people autistic. But it's not possible to point out an exact border between autistic people and non-autistic people. It's just a grey hazy area.

I believe, if everyone who use to post on this forum, would do a psychological test or an autism test, then probably lots of them would appear to have many autistic properties, while they're not aware of it yet.

Since there's so much written about autism, I'm not even trying to give a description. But I can try to tell about some properties of myself:

- I've (almost) no intuition about what people feel, but on the other hand I've a better sense about logical things
- I'm not very good at verbal communication, even less at non-verbal communication, but to express myself by letter, is more my "thing".
- I alway have a problem with unexpected things, can't improvise when there's short time, but when I've time enough to prepare for something which has to be done, I can pretty well.
- I can't filter visible or audible information. If there are 5 people talking in the same room, I hear lots of noise, but I understand (almost) nothing. When I am reading a website or a forum, then all those advertisements, and flashing pictures are disturbing me. When I'm driving my car in the dark, then I only need the lights of of my car and to see the edges of the road. If there are lights everywhere: lights of houses, garden lights, very bright lights of other cars, billboards etc. it's disturbing me. All I need is a black road, and white lines at the left and right sides, where I have to stay between.

I know I can think of many more examples, perhaps later, but for now I think it's enough. :)

I agree. People do not use always the right terms or words. In Dutch we have a word which can be translated at many ways: http://www.mijnwoordenboek.nl/vertalen. ... =NL+%3E+EN
but also: deviation, offset, variation, or saying with my own words: "being different then..."

So, perhaps I have a deviation from the rest of the world. Which means that the rest of the world has a deviation from me. 8)

My sister has SEVERE autism. She also has similar things like tourette's, pika, and others. I feel bad for her... Really, she's 11 and still wearing diapers and can't talk. I think she understands a lot more than people give her credit for. It's not a disability, their bodies just run a lot differently.

Stinker squad, thanks! :D

XPR, fortunately my autism is not so bad as your sister's. When I was about 11 or 12 years old, I didn't need diapers, but I used to sleep so heavily that I didn't wake up when I had to... if you know what I mean. Not sure if it has to do with the autism, perhaps..

When I was that age I never dared to talk about it with anyone, but well... I'm a bit older now. :)

BTW, I think autism isn't something about the body, but more something about the mind.

Yeah this is what I'm talking about. I tend to say the wrong thing. In this case it's because ASD stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder and that's what made me think it was a disorder.
