Amazing cognitive illusions -update { Dec 12,2012 }

Hi there, I stumbled upon these mysterious images.

Take your time while viewing these images, and the optical
illusions will play tricks on your mind too.

"Lilac chaser ::

Do you see the phantom Green disk? It is an illusion, since there is
no green at all; It's all in your mind. ;)

"Lilac chaser consists of 12 lilac blurred disks arranged in a circle around a
small black, central cross on a gray background. One of the disks
disappears briefly (for about 0.1 second), then the next (about 0.125
second later), and the next, and so on, in a clockwise direction. When one
stares at the cross for about 20 seconds or so, one first sees a gap
running around the circle of lilac disks, then a green
disk running around the circle of lilac disks, then a green disk
running around on the gray background, with the lilac disks having
disappeared or having been erased by the green disk. This is due to an
interesting effect in which the colors of the lilac disks are inverted in the
optical illusion to a green color. "

Next illusion:

The Ebbinghaus illusion (or Titchener circles) is an optical illusion of relative size perception.

The two orange circles are exactly the same size, however they do not look the same size.

ImageImage
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next illusion:

Take your time and look at this, and you'll notice that the
discs never stop spinning. If you focus spot on one disc, then
it will temporarily stop spinning, but it's neighbors will continue to spin.
It's all in the mind, right? Image

ImageImage
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Hermann Grid ::

Thîs one is most maddening,

there is the illusion here that sometimes the white circle intersections
are replaced by dark blobs which appear at random intersections...

"This illusion is characterized by “ghostlike” gray blobs perceived at the
intersections of a white (or light-colored) grid on a black background.
The gray blobs disappear when looking directly at an intersection."

You may be asking yourself, why do these black blobs keep appearing?
Am I seeing things?

Image
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next:

If you concentrate on this one, you'll notice that it appears to
flex continuously; However it is not moving at all, it's all in
your mind.

Spinning Disks Illusion - Moving Disks Illusion

source: http://spectacular-illusions.blogspot.c ... chive.html

When sets of disks with tangential greylevel gradients are arranged in concentric circles (see image above, most observers perceive these disks moving around the centre,. This motion illusion is enhanced for large-scale and bright images and depends to a large extent to dynamic changes in the stimulus such as elicited by involuntary eye movements or blinks – fixating the centre of the pattern does abolish the illusion, whereas scanning the picture the motion sensation. A reliably effective version of this illusion, which does not require eye movements (i.e. persists when observers fixate the target in the centre of the image), can be generated by modulating the background luminance of the array of disks . This stimulus offers the opportunity of studying this motion illusion – the percept of spinning disks in the absence of any physical displacement – in a highly controlled manner in psychophysical and physiological experiments, because it is not depending on involuntary eye movements or eye blinks.
Image
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't see it much, but others may notice a slight twirling or twisting
in these slimy spirals.

I'll post more of these if I can find more. See you next time. Image

Ah, I love illusions! I have a nice book titled "Trick Eyes" by Akiyoshi Kitaoka, I love it because it has many different types, along with some of the science behind illusions, and large pictures. I recommend checking it out sometime. :)

Nice stuff! The illusion with the spinning wheels is used in Mark's level "Lillie's Illusion".

It actually doesn't... the first few times you try this out, it may feel like an eye-strain, but then it's almost relaxing...

Oh,really?
that's good!
but i'm still scard from trying it!

(variations of the Hermann Grid above)

"Kajita's chromatic scintillating grid illusion"

In the next,
the upper-left image consists of red parts, but the light-red dots appear to be tinted bluish or to scintillate so. The real color of them is shown at the right side. The lower-right image consists of magenta (red-purple) parts, but the light-magenta dots appear to be tinted bluish or to scintillate so. The real color of them is shown at the left side.

All white dots appear to be tinted reddish or to scintillate so.

Some technical info on why it happens:
In the Hermann Grid, the intersection that you are looking directly at (orange circle) falls onto the fovea, which has very little lateral inhibition due to the small receptive field and high concentration of photoreceptors. Our perception within this area is fairly accurate, and we see the area as either white or light gray. In the area within the green circle, the dark and light areas are balanced, so no gain adjustment is needed, and we see this area as white. At the peripheral intersections (purple circle), most of the receptive field is flooded with white light, causing strong lateral inhibition which results in reduced gain and an area that appears gray.

Awww,i really want to try it,but i have a glasses and...maybe that will made my eyes bad more! :(
I must buy the 3D glasses to see it! :(

And that kind of picture doesn't work with 3D glasses, you must cross/uncross your eyes.

I guess i made it! :D
if the 3D made the two pic a one pic.that mean i saw it! :D
Right? :)

Yeah, it's hard to believe, (Technos is right on that.)

A careful analysis reveals that the gray hovers around the 6B6B6B value, for both A and B.

That's strange, the black/white grid that I posted earlier disappeared.

Oh, well, here is a similar one:

kidkidaaa1 may be the only one immune to its haunting "white-dot" effects...

I had difficulties seeing the last one right now, although usually they always work with me. Once it clicked back, I was no longer able to get rid of the effect.

Seems the more tired you are the longer it takes to work on you...
