Day off for St. George.

Post by popo » Wed Apr 27, 2005 2:53 pm

Would you like St. George's Day to be a public holiday in England?

If so, go to this website and cast your vote. It's completely anonymous, and you don't have to be English to vote.

It's about time he had some recognition, we'd be overrun by dragons if it weren't for him. And we'd all like an extra day off wouldn't we? 8) :D

Very definitely.

HIS day is one day before MY day, and I've always thought it should be a 2-day holiday.
However, I guess I could settle for one - in his name - even if no-one over this side knows who he is.
No offense meant, but they probably think "dragon" is a UK for dinosaur).

Thanks Cathy and Ann for voting.

I think we should all get our birthdays off work too, or the day after our birthdays if we go out on the town. 8)

I've voted too Popo - course we should have a holiday. We won't get it though - there are too many Bank Holidays around this time - Easter, May Day and Whitsun.

Add St George's Day, then we need more holidays sprinkled around later in the year to even things up!

Whitsun is a Christian religious holiday (You know, the appearance of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles, etc) but in the UK it has become a national Bank Holiday.

Whitsuntide used to be celebrated every year when I was a child, with processions and marching bands. Then it got changed to Spring Bank Holiday and now has nothing to do with religion at all. It's now the last Monday in May. May Day is the first Monday in May, and I don't know what that's for.

Thanks for voting everyone. Not sure if it will do any good, it's more the principle of the thing. We should be allowed to celebrate our own National Day like other countries do. One of our naval ships was told it couldn't fly the England flag because it might offend the Turkish navy who were docked near by. You couldn't make it up.

What would you Americans think if you were told you couldn't wave the Stars and Stripes cos it might offend the Chinese bloke down the road? It wouldn't happen would it?

I'll get down off my soapbox now.

Same here - except our flag will continue to fly AFTER the war also - ours was flying BEFORE the war and will continue to fly whether there is a war on or not!!! Anyway, glad to hear you've got your flag up, the cat!! :D

The Flag!
There is nothing more glorious than seeing your country's flag flying.
My flag was flying long before the first Gulf War and will never come down.
After 9/11 the streets were lined with flags.
How soon everyone forgets.

I think people forget their Patron Saints, except for the Irish with St Patrick of course.

Saint Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland (also Greece and Russia) and there's not too many people mention him now. I can't see any Government giving a day off to celebrate our Saints, nor do I expect the small businesses would welcome another holiday.

I certainly will give my support Poops, can't see it doing any good though.

Sorry to be a party pooper, just my opinion for all it's worth.

Regarding the flags, I used to fly the Union Jack and the Cross of St Andrew. Can't do it in this country now as it's considered to be a religious or political statement.
