I'm assuming that on default it goes to win zip. To fix that you go to your start menu, click "MY COMPUTER", click the tools menu and select "FOLDER OPTIONS", click the "FILE TYPES" tab, you should se a list of file types, scroll down to "ZIP", click on it and then click "CHANGE", select the thing tat says "CONPRESSED (ZIPPED) FOLDER" and then just hit okay! ... Sorry if that was a bit confoozing.
Don't eat your computer... or it might eat you! :stinkylol:

The easy way is to just uninstall "Winzip" from the "Add or Remove Software" in your "Control Panel".
Windows XP already has the ability to compress and extract files and folders.

If you right click the zip file you should get the option of Winzip or Windows extractor. Clicking on 'extract all' will take you to the Windows wizard. Winzip has the little book icons at the side. See piccy below.

How do I find this? My win XP has never had the extractor, although I've seen it on other's computers. Rightclicking as pop says only gives me winzip and if I uninstall it, I get no unzipping at all.

I think you may want to use the trial version of WinRAR (which lasts forever) It has a really good interface -- no match for WinZIP, and can extract and create both rar and zip files.
Rest in peace, Kym. I hardly knew ya.
Rest in peace, Marinus. A bright star, you were ahead of me on my own tracks of thought. I miss you.

Winzip and Winrar will make themselves the default when you install them. To change it from default open Winzip or Winrar, go to the options menu and click settings. You should be able to change the file associations in there. Uncheck the ZIP box and it should go back to Windows Extractor. Following John925's instructions will do the same thing.

Windows XP ships with a built-in compression/extraction utility.
See this link for further information:
http://www.wiu.edu/users/ids/compressxp.pdf
Note: You will need Adobe Acrobat to view.

Your file association has became corrupted.
To restore the zip setting:

1. Right click on a zip file.
2. Hold your mouse over "Open With".
3. In the resulting menu, select "Choose Program...".
4. Select "Compressed (zipped) Folders" from the "Recommended Programs" section at the top.
5. Once you've made your selection, place a checkmark in the box titled: "Always use the the selected program to open this kind of file".

If for some reason the above selection is missing.
Run the following file:
http://dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/zipfolder_fix.reg
Answer "Yes" to import into the Registry.
This will restore the Windows XP default settings for you.

thanks Mark. I did as instucted until "always use this program" that isn't there. When I choose "Compressed (zipped) Folders it opens the win XP program. which is great, because now I kow where it is. But no box to make it default. but, I do know how to change defaults through other means, so I'll give that a go later. for now (and for the past 6 years) Winzip is working fine.
