Have a safe and spooky Halloween!

Post by janetgalle » Tue Oct 31, 2006 11:36 am

Cold and snowy here. They are predicting up to 8 inches of the nasty white stuff. (Now, that's scary!)
But we will do our best to have a great Halloween.....And we hope you all do too!

I don't look forward to Halloween at all. Where I live Trick or Treating means knocking on your door, not dressed up, and if you don't give them money they throw eggs at your door or your car, or spray silly string all over everything. It's a real pain to clean off.

I hope everyone who does it properly has a fun time. I've just been sent an email showing pets that have been dressed up for Halloween. Really cute and very funny.

That's what the youth is like here. Not all trick or treaters are like that. There are a few kids who come round with their parents, dressed up, but even those ones expect money not sweets. It's the same when Bonfire Night comes, and the 'penny for the guy' ritual. Those that still do it go to less and less trouble making a decent guy and still expect you to give them money. It may just be me getting cynical in my old age.

Some how I missed this last night  Oh ya I was trick or treating with Emily & some friends & we did have a very fun & safe Halloween 8) :D :D :D J.G. your picture is AWSOME, you are very talented, thanks for sharing it with us. :D :D

Popo, I've never heard of "Bonfire Night" or the "Penny for the Guy" ritual
Pleeeaaasseee tell us more.
As far as giving money out instead of treats, that's insane... isn't that a open invitation for every street urchin to bang on your door demanding your cash ... hell why not post blank checks on the door, save the little urchins the trouble of knocking.

You must have heard of Bonfire Night, Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. November 5th. People would burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire because he tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

Anyway, children used to make a guy - old clothes stuffed with newspaper and a mask for a face - and sit him on a street corner with a box at the side saying 'Penny for the Guy'. It was a way for kids to get some small change to spend on sweets. I'm talking pre war here, but I remember doing it as a kid too. It's dwindled off a bit now though, I don't think the kids can be bothered to make the guy.

Anyway (again), when halloween became a bigger thing here and kids started trick or treating it kind of naturally followed on that they were given money - only small change you understand, not notes. At first they used to dress up and carve out turnips - we didn't have pumpkins - and it was worth saving all your small change to give them.

Then about 6 or 7 years ago the yob culture got wind of it and thought it would be clever to go round knocking on doors, saying trick or treat, and if you told them to sod off cos they weren't dressed up they would do something nasty when you'd closed the door. It spoiled it for everyone and I don't answer the door at all to anyone on Halloween anymore. This year the government told shops not to sell eggs to kids under 18 so they wouldn't be able to throw them about. One teenage lad was arrested for having 2 dozen eggs on his person. It'd be funny if it wasn't such a shame.

Right, lesson over, back to work. :D

I'm so sorry you can't enjoy your Halloween's popo, maybe one day the egging tradition will fade away.

Popo I wouldn't look forward to the holiday if we had to deal with this. Takes the fun out of it for the little ones. I'm also glad the kids here don't expect money
