Question about animations
Question about animations
As far as I can tell, those of you who have animations are linking them here from another site. Most of the sites I know about do not want people linking to their site. I think it has something to do with limiting their bandwidth. Do the sites that you are linking to allow linking? If so what are they?
A question for Patrick. I have animations and emoticons (gifs) stored on my hard-drive. The only way I can use them here is in an attachment. Other boards that I have posted on, allow them to be used just as the "official emoticons" listed on this board are used. Why can we not use our own? Is the a way to do this? The command used on other boards is "\image{name of image}".

Here is some info that Liz sent me when I asked the same question- I just signed up with (http://upload.pixhost.com/index.asp) pix host and uploaded my images that I found for about .50 cents a month, depending on size of pictures- Since you pay to upload your images (some require that you link back where ever you got them from) you are using there site for legally linking your images- Does this help?I've looked up bandwith theft, and found a pretty clear explanation of it here:
http://foxtrotters.tripod.com/bndwdth.htm
Seems that every time we use a free animation by linking direct to the animation site, we are using their limited bandwidth which they have to pay for. This makes me feel quite bad, so I'm not going to use animations in this way any more.
I think it's quite OK to link to something you have saved on your hard drive, or if you have your own website.

Thanks for the information, Dylan. That is a good alternative to do it legally. I have seen other sites that allow you to store photos/gifs also - don't remember the urls. Does anyone know of others?
I am assuming that the site you post in your profile is where you are finding the images - right?
Thanks Cathy. I dont read french - do you store the images there or link to their images?

Hi Gen,
If I can recall, Watcher started the images. They came from fancy's place.com
Majic1 started using them as did the rest of us, we were all novices btw.
I take responsibility for Cat using it, my tutorial led her to this site. So far as I'm aware, they are quite happy for the links.
I do understand there's other web sites that are failing because of 'overuse'. I understand where they are coming from and hope others feel the same.
I'm happy you brought this up Gen.

Thanks to Kymmie.

Thanks for the information, Maureen. I really do appreciate it. Now, I am going to show my ignorance. When I have looked at these sites, I see the images that can be posted, but I don't understand how posting their url results in only that image showing up and not the whole page the image is on. Does that make sense? Generally if you show the url, the whole page will be downloaded, not just a specific item on the page.
Actually, Bear started this. He was the very first to post one of these. I think this was the first:

I remember being so intrigued by this - HOW did Bear DO THIS? HE told me how!!!
I also use Fancyplace.com - they support you linking to their page. I don't use them too often anymore - the novelty wore off - and I have fun reading posts, NOT looking at pictures! --- but if you do, look for a website that allows you to do this. Fancyplace is just one!!!
Most of the posts with pictures, I do not look at - I'm still on dial-up - it takes too much time!

I noticed you and O/G used "Heather's" Animation page too Majic for your USA flag - her website is great but is always going down due to over-use.
There are not many sites that let you use their animations without linking back to their site . I don't know how to link back - must ask the hubby

On the subject of who started all this, I have a good memory and can recall a certain PM stating " I want to do that, how does he do it?"
I didn't know HOW to include animations in my posts but received the instructions from YOU majic1.
Not that all this matters Gen, I do hope your questions have been answered satisfactorily.
Btw, my sig was created by Poops. Nice eh?

Bear was the first to insert a picture in his post last New Year's Eve, 2004. MAD, Majic and I all said "How did he do that"? It was most impressive.
Hot Linking....
Posts covered with large pictures and animations are over used and annoying; and, they make the loading of the post too slow.

I agree with Majic1. Not all of us have Broadband available in our areas.Displaying an image or file that doesn't belong to you is often a violation of copyright, making you open to litigation. The owner of the copyright could utilize DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act ) law to have your information given for use in legal proceedings. The first step is a strongly worded cease and desist letter.

Thanks to all of you for your responses!
Thanks to you all and Cat, I now understand how this works and how to do it. I know that some sites do not want you linking back to them and will respect that. If I use them at all, I will keep them small as I understand the problems some of you have with dial-up connections. Majic and OG, I agree with you. Even though I have a high speed connection, some are very slow to load and it is annoying. Also, some set off my security system, which is set not to accept third party cookies.
Usually these sites allow you to download images to your hard-drive, which I have done over there years. Thus I have a fairly large collection of "emoticons" some similiar to those provided to us when we post and many that are different. All are small in size. However, I can't use them here because the board doesn't support that. I was hoping that Patrick would join the discussion and let us know if that is possible.
Thanks again for educating me, I really do appreciate it!
