Hows the diets going?
Hows the diets going?
Remember the slimming wonderland thread? some people said they wanted to loose weight, has anyone had any success?
I managed to loose the several pounds I needed to be at the optimum weight for my 6foot 2 frame.
This link contains a very good chart. http://www.coolnurse.com/calories_burned.htm
I found this table (below) most interesting, it kinda shows that men (generally weigh more than women) burn eergy faster than women, alot faster in some cases. On a second note, walking up stairs burns alot more calories than running fast!

Call me sad if you like! but in computing class about 3 weeks ago, we had 30 mins to build something practical. Most people went for simple calculators with adding subtraction facilities etc, I made a tiny bug ridden program to count the daily calories
Put your food in the left, with the calories in the right, and hit the ! button
P.S this is for a man (2500) calories, women should eat approx 2000 calories for average lifestyles
P.P.S it shrinks and sits in the tray!

Yeah, Eeyore, that's always been my opinion of beets, too, the bleeding red stuff that contaminates everything it touches. I'm having a hard time grasping the idea of a sandwich made from beets. Jeez, sounds like something I might have been tortured with as a child -- "You're going to sit at that table until you EAT that beet sandwich, young lady!"

Jeez, Popo, pouring beat juice on mashed potatoes, like, ON PURPOSE? My heart might have given out, to see someone do that when I was a kid!
It sounds to me like you folks on the other side of the pond have a somewhat different relationship with beets. Or maybe I'm wrong. Anyone in the States eating beetroot sandwiches? This is an item I've never seen on a menu, but, hey, it's a big country.
Speaking of big country, I'm leaving in about an hour to fly to south Florida, pick up a car and drive back. I've loaded Wonderland on the laptop we're taking, but doubt I'll have much time to play. But just in case I need a fix, either of the game or the forum....
I'll be back June 14 -- just in time for the new Wonderland! Yeah!!!

Dianna, I know you are on your way down here, but maybe you will read this later.
I've had turkey and cranberry sauce sandwiches and tomato sandwiches, but never have heard of beetroot sandwiches.
Popo, we have made potato pancakes with leftover mashed potatoes, but hadn't heard of putting cabbage in them. I like boiled potatoes and cabbage, so I bet I would like your bubble and squeak.
Do you all use grits? Leftover grits can also be fried like potato pancakes. Grits any way are good!

I have heard of grits but I don't know what they are exactly.
I thought potato pancakes had flour in them, we don't put flour in bubble & squeak, you can put onion in it though. Really, it's just a way to use up left over veggies from the Sunday roast, so I suppose you could put anything in it. I don't eat it very often cos there's never anything left from my Sunday roasts - we're all gannets!
What do you use beets for, anyway? Things that we call beets are used for feeding cattle, but beetroot is a small (about 2 inches accross) deep red vegetable that is really sweet. It's usually sold in jars, already sliced, in vinegar, and is used mostly as a garnish on salads or sandwiches.

Popo, grits are a coarse ground corn meal that is cooked by simmering, like you would cook oatmeal. Mostly it is used as breakfast food. Some eat it with milk, cheese, honey, or bacon. I prefer butter on mine.
I think we use beets mainly in salads, although I have seen them used as a side vegetable. I have seen them for sale uncooked in the produce section. They also are available in jars much as you described. All that I have seen served are small, usually 2 inches across and smaller. I guess that we've just never thought of using them in sandwiches. I will have to try them that way.
Your Sunday roasts sound good! yummy!

Since I've been to the UK a couple times i gotta say some of the things they eat there are Very Very strange (blood pudding being one of the more gross ones). But their Sunday Roast dinners are lovely. Yummy lamb (or beef) roasted potatos, turnips. and yorkshire pudding!! *drools* Ok I'm ready to go back to the UK now.
I've always been a brat n always will be.. live with it
Blood pudding! You make it sound so horrible
It's called Black Pudding, and it is made from pig's blood with seasonings and barley, and is in a skin like a sausage. BUT it doesn't taste of blood!!
If you were to try it without knowing what it was you would never guess it was blood. It tastes peppery and is very good with fry-ups.
Then, of course, there's always tripe, and chitterlings and bag!!!!
