2. Yes, you'll need the boxes for one of the devices.

The hints:
How to stop the cannons?

1) Go 2xR through the yellow TP. Push the lower box 2xR over the ice curve and 1xU through the TP. Follow to push it onto the starting sign. Don't move this box again until you blocked the cannons.
2) Return through the yellow TP. Push the upper box 2xL over the ice curve and 1xD, then the sphere L against the box.
3) Enter the right yellow TP and go carefully around the central box. Push the left box D, L and U. You'll walk over the yellow button and open the yellow gates.
4) Push the central yellow sphere R and then the left one D. Done!

How to start the flash gun?

Prepare the device in the order indicated by the notches:
1a) Push the reflector R over the ice curve and through the blue TP.
1b) Don't follow! Go D over the ice and the raft instead and push the reflector R through the other blue TP.
1c) Again: Don't follow! Jump U over the right and D over the left tramp instead and push the reflector D through the red TP.
1d) And now: Follow! Push the reflector all the way R above the right raft.
1e) Jump D and R, then go over the right raft and the ice to push the reflector U.
1f) Get on the right breaktile to collect the first bonus coin. From here: Push the reflector R in position.
2) Push the prism U into the lava pool.
3) Push the boulder U into the lava pool, then go to the cannons.
4) Wait for a good moment to jump L and push the cannons in the order left - right - center.

How to start the RGB mixers?

1) Use two of the steel boxes to fill the lava pool beneath the upper white TP.
2) Use the last steel box to replace the missing little pyramid inside the eastern mixer.
3) Push the red and the blue spheres D into the lava pool and get the bonus coins on the breaktiles.
4) Push the green sphere L or R to start the device and wait for a good moment to leave the area through the white TP.
