If I wanted to give specific custom music for each level in Return to Wonderland, what would I do? What tools would I need?

No idea. No idea at all.

Impulse Tracker music files

IT (impulse Tracker) music files are hard to find.

Supposedly you'd convert your own regular music into IT music files,
but I don't know how.

Then when you have your selection converted, you'd rename each music.IT
file to "res#.dat" so the game can pick it up. { res3.dat -- res8.dat }

You can drag special res_.dat files directly into VLC media and they will play.

Image

The following ##.DAT files are actually IT music files in disguise:

music selection 1 = res3.dat = res3.IT
music selection 2 = res4.dat = res4.IT = happyIntroFinal
music selection 3 = res5.dat = res5.IT
music selection 4 = res6.dat = res6.IT = Tune3
music selection 5 = res7.dat = res7.IT = Intro final
music selection 6 = res8.dat = res8.IT = Scary level

This is the official IT homepage:

Impulse Tracker samples on Wikipedia

I think that IT music files are similar to .midi and .mod

It would be easier to just turn the game music off and
play your favorite tunes on your headphones.

You can download VLC Media Player from this link: :)

IT Format Music

updated:

It is very hard to convert Wav and MP3 to Midi and IT format music.

However, if there's a way to do it, then try these links>

A) Download and install Schism Tracker { great tool for analyzing IT music. }
http://schismtracker.org/wiki/Schism%20Tracker

B) Download and install OPENMPT
http://openmpt.org/

or

C) Try the MODPLUG Tracker { may export to .IT }
http://www.modplug.com/trackerinfo.html

There might be a way to convert MP3 to .IT using MODPlug
but I'm not sure.

Also, check here for more digital Trackers,
(some export to .IT)

Okay, here's a better idea: *(I don't think the previous ideas will work at all). Image

Download and install AmazingMidi,
this program converts WAV files to MIDI, { It's free. }

http://www.pluto.dti.ne.jp/araki/amazingmidi/

So, if your song is not originally in WAV format, then
first convert it to WAV using some software,

You can use this FRee MP3 to WAV decoder {
http://download.cnet.com/MP3-to-WAV-Dec ... 60498.html }

... and then use the AmazingMidi program to convert
the WAV to MIDI, ...., and then search on the internet for a way
to convert MIDI to .IT

In summary, the steps are MP3 --> WAV --> MIDI --> (missing link) --> IT

You'll have to find the missing link that converts MIDI to .IT; It's out there somewhere.

Sounds like a complicated series of steps, but it's the only way to do it.

I'm exhausted.

Good luck.

MIDI to IT is doable with OpenMPT (which is a newer version of ModPlug) but I'm not sure how good the WAV to MIDI conversion really is.

It is impossible (or just very hard) to convert MP3 files to IT files because they are 2 different creatures. IT files stores the voices of the instrument and the sheet music, while MP3 contains the finished product.

Well, technically you could make a really ugly and bone-headed IT file by making the entire song into a WAV sample and then putting it inside an IT. But using it in-game would be unwieldy. Loading a level would take forever.

My new idea is that we can use other people's IT music, (already created).

Through extensive browsing I found this website Scene.ORG
http://www.scene.org/dir.php
http://www.scene.org/news.php
http://www.scene.org/search.php?search=IT+music&x=0&y=0

which offers free IT music as well as music in more common formats.

{ The formats are mixed together, so I had to search for IT. }

For starters, I zipped up a collection of 41 IT music files,

you can download from this link: http://sdrv.ms/Y3yyjR

( Scene.ORG is all publicly-free, non-pirated. )

The next step is for someone to create an automatic res_.dat
file changer that intelligently changes CustomRes or CustomMusic . ;)

Will someone please make a res_ changer?
