Gingerbread Houses

Haven't figured out how to create the zipped files in the correct folders yet.

That being said, the houses should go into a folder called "Gingerbread" in the CustomHouses folder.

The custom level to go with this is posted. Please let me know of any problems you run into so I can fix them. Will be watching the forum to see if anyone needs help, or anything I can fix. :)

Go here to download the models:

Er, I just got this message when I tried to download the file.
The selected Attachment does not exist anymore

404 File Not Found: The File files/gingerbread_779.zip does not exist.
I have already downloaded it from the other thread, but I thought this looked too big to be just houses, so was going to download it to see what was wrong.

Popo,

I find that really odd, because at no time did I have any file named gingerbread_779. Don't have a clue what to think of that.

 I'm sorry that I have to keep telling you that things are wrong, but you seem to have a zip file in a zip file here. Plus you only have one texture for the gazebo and it needs three. You can only name the textures model#.jpg if there is one of them. If there are more you should leave the original name on them.

Again, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but hopefully you will learn from it all. :D

I'm very confused by this textures on the gazebo thing. You're telling me that I could put the gazebo in my level and it would show three different textures? Could I do the same with the pillars?

I just figured the object HAD to have a name like model#.3ds and the texture had to have the corresponding model#.jpg. That's why I didn't put those files in the zip file... I thought they were just extras in case you wanted to change the texture of the whole thing.

How does the game know what textures to use where?

Ok... another question to add to the mess here...
Can .gif files or any other animated files be used? For instance, could we create an object that would sparkle?

As far as the zip files, think I know ok where the files are supposed to go, but when I zip them up, they don't zip right. Maybe they look different when I zip them than they do when they're downloaded and unzipped?

Will make sure I don't leave anymore spaces in my filenames. And yes, I am confused about the title and filename.

I'm also grateful for the help! :) I had no idea I had screwed it up that much, as it seemed to be working just fine for me... not realizing that the gazebo should be 3 textures... but the rest all worked. So I knew I had everything in the right place, at least on my machine.

When I get this all figured out, I'm going to be writing it up for myself, and for anyone else that needs help understanding this. Someone mentioned they wanted to create some web pages, a tutorial type thing, and I'd love to work with whoever that was. I suspect you guys are answering all the same questions repeatedly. :)

So please feel free to tell me my mistakes... I don't take this as criticism, but as instruction, and I'm grateful for the time you're giving me, and how patient you're all being with me. :)

Jean :)

Hi Jean,

I need to make one thing clear. You can't alter any of the items that are installed in the game. You can only add to them.

Custom floors, for instance, are just like carpets effectively. They cover up the default floor, they don't change it.

If you want any other things, walls, pillars, other objects, you have to make then in a 3d program, save them as 3ds files and then use them as custom models. That is the only way to do it.

Also, nothing can move. The only animated things are the installed things. You can only make objects that don't move. That goes for texture files too. It would be nice to have moving things but you would have to pester Patrick for that.

There are several formats you can use for texture files. Bmp, tga, jpg, but gifs don't work. We usually use jpg as the file is smaller, and generally the quality is good enough.

As for the jpg file names, you can use the names that come with the files or, if there is only one file, change it to match the model#.

It's the model file that has the information about the textures, and it knows what belongs where, but it will also accept the model#.jpg name. The difference is that it will only use one file if you name it model#, but you can have many files if you use the original names. I will say at this point though that no texture file name can be longer than 8 characters or it won't show up. So 'gingerbread.jpg' wouldn't work but 'gngrbrd.jpg' would.

Keep asking questions as you feel the need. You're probably more confused than most because you have done work for The Sims and this is so different. I've not had experience of anything other than Wonderland so it seems natural to me. :D

So... which of these nicks is Patrick? Need to know who I'm going to be begging at. :)

Did Patrick make Wonderland from scratch or from some other program that creates games? Wondering how customizable Wonderland is, since I already have ideas... and I suspect lots of other people do too, especially the ones creating levels, objects and textures.

Patrick is the almighty who made all the Wonderland games. He is the boss man, the one who says yeh or nay to everything.

You'll need to be very good at begging, and a pair of knee pads wouldn't go amiss, you'll be spending a lot of time on your knees.
