Alt-X doesn't work

I've seen several authors suggest using Alt-X to see the full level.
Alt-X doesn't work on my system.
How is this supposed to work, and is it documented anywhere?

You hold Alt and x at the same time while using the number keys on the side of the keyboard to look around.Be careful cause you can throw the whole board out of focus.

you can also hold down the shift key while using the arrow keys to look around, it's a lot easier, alt-x works better on 3d
