ANY COMPUTER EXPERTS
I just got a 19" monitor & now I find that RTW is very jerky when I play. The guy that put it in increased the screen size for the game but it's still playing very jerkily. For some other games that I have he said I need a new game card to accommodate the new screen size. When it is installed will this improve the jerkiness in the Wonderland game too???? Not knowing very much about the techs of computers can anyone help me?? Wonderland was so very smooth & now it really bothers my eyes (even the conveyors move really slow & almost come to a standstill).
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. At least I could then sound like I know what I'm talking about. Thanks anyone.

Hi Tasha,
Are you using Windows XP?
You first want to make sure that Windows is properly identifying your new monitor.
You may also need to adjust your refresh rate and resolution in the "Display" section of your Control Panel. It's under the Advanced tab in the Settings.
Be sure you have the latest video drivers for your video card and have DirectX 9.0c.
You can find this by typing: dxdiag in "Run..." that's on your Start menu.
You can also try starting "Return to Wonderland" with the Window option and see if you experience any problems.

Hi Mark & thanks for your reply. When you suggested playing RTW in the window mode I also tried changing the various settings within that box & experimented with them. Finally found one setting that really improves the jerkiness so hopefully the problem is solved. It really is diffcult to understand all "computer workings" when you know nothing about them -- I just know how to turn it on & play. Think I need a fulltime computer expert on call 24/7
Thanks again for your help.

I found this post on "search" ... having similar problems to Tasha but changing resolutions and being in windowed mode made no difference
I'm experiencing the "jerky" screen effect I've only seen before with huge levels with lots of items in ... now I'm getting it on small levels - I even tested a basic level with one character and one coin in it ... all still froze momentarily about once a second ... makes for poor enjoyment .. can anyone offer any help please ?
Mark - can you spare me some advice at all ?
Tasha - which settings worked for you please ?
Many thanks in advance
Kaz

Jerky play avoidance advice
Hello, I have a few suggestions:
Try running dxdiag (using Start -> Run). Go to the Display tab, and check that Direct3D Acceleration is Enabled. Click the Test Direct3D button to see that it is working properly. If it is not, or if this is slow or jerky, you may need to get updated drivers for your video card, or else "rollback" any recent driver update that you installed.
Go to Display Properties (in Control Panel, or right-click on your Desktop and select Properties). On the Settings tab, click the Advanced button. Go to the Troubleshoot tab of the resulting dialog box, and make sure that the Hardware acceleration slider is set to Full. If it is already there, you might like to try moving it down a couple of notches - although this is unlikely to solve your problem.
Also, try closing any other programs that are running. If you have not restarted your computer recently, try doing that. Also, try to close background processes - look at the Notification Area on the opposite end of the Taskbar, clicking the little arrow button to show all the icons, and look for an option to close each program (try right-clicking on the icon).
Finally, in the game launcher screen, try reducing the display size and depth (the number of bits), and changing between Full Screen and Windowed.
Well, that's about all I can think of... sorry if these do not help you. Could you say what model of video card you have, and how much main memory and video memory you have? The memory information should be visible in System settings (right-click on "My Computer" and select Properties). Have you knowingly changed anything about the computer in between it working and not working?

Hi Kazza,kaz67 wrote:I'm experiencing the "jerky" screen effect

Sorry to hear about that.
Is this problem only happening with RTW?
When did this problem begin?
Had you made any changes to your computer at that time?
Do you have an ATI graphics card?
If so, try changing the Vertical Sync:
Control Panel-->Display-->Settings-->Advanced-->OpenGL or Direct3D-->
Either check or uncheck "Wait for Vertical Sync".
Try changing the Refresh Rate.
Control Panel-->Display-->Settings-->Advanced-->Monitor
Then set your Screen Refresh Rate to something else.
If you have a Dual Core Processor, there are many fixes here:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=983781
If you have PCI video card and Windows XP there is a download to fix the latency here:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=951
If you have a spare monitor, you can swap them to rule out the monitor.
If you have not done so yet, make a back up of all the your levels and textures, and uninstall RTW, then reinstall it again.
Run Disk Defragmenter.
It's in your Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools folder.
Be sure you have the latest version of your video drivers and DirectX 9.0c.
"End Task" any programs that may be running in the background before launching RTWD.
Press Ctrl + Alt + Esc on the keyboard and click User Name.
Now End Task everything under your computer's User Name except for explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe
Also disable any real-time virus scanners.
If you suspect a virus or spy ware, there is a free online scan that I can recommend here:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
If you are connected to a Local Area Network, this might be the solution:
1. Right-Click "My Computer"
2. Select "Manage"
3. Click on "Device Manager"
4. Double-Click on your NIC under "Network Adapters"
5. In the new window, select the "Advanced" tab
6. Select "Connection Type" and manually set the value of your NIC. (Not "Auto Sense" which is default.)
7. Restart your computer.
Let me know how you make out.

Hi Kaz.......the guy that set up my new screen (who is a friend) fixed things for me so don't know exactly what he did. I do play in "Windowed" mode & when my RTW game opens & you get that first little picture showing the settings for "Game Display" & "Editor Display" he changed my settings for "Game Display" to the following:
1024 X 768
16 Bit
Windowed
Since then I have had no problems with jerkiness.
