Running Wonderland games without 3D acceleration?

Post by chrise » Sat Mar 17, 2007 12:56 pm

Hello,

Quite a technical question coming up...

Is it at all possible to run any Wonderland game without an accelerated 3D graphics card? I'm not talking about whether it would run decently or even at a playable speed - I realise that these would depend on CPU performance. I mean, is there any way to persuade the game to even try to run? I find that the original Wonderland games say "Failed to create 3D scene" and Adventures gives me a message saying "Your Computer's 3D Graphics Drivers appear not to be functioning properly."
Presumably this is due to some specific check for the presence of 3D acceleration, so I am asking whether there is any way to make the game attempt to run without it. Please do not start telling me about updated video drivers, new video cards, etc. I am trying to run the games in VMware on Linux, so that is not an option. There is some experimental 3D acceleration support, and I will continue trying to get that to work too, but I would like to see whether performance would be acceptable without.
So if anyone knows a way to make Wonderland games load without 3D acceleration, I would greatly appreciate that information. Patrick, if you know how to do this, or if you would be willing to provide some way to do it in a future update, that would be very kind of you. I realise that the check may be performed in some layer outside your control, so don't worry if it can't easily be removed, but it would be nice if I could have this so that I did not have to reboot into Windows whenever I want to play Wonderland.

Note: An alternative which would probably work just as well is if there is a "fake accelerated 3D" driver for Windows. Does anyone know of such a thing?

Do you have an analogue of dxdiag?
If so, what does it tell?

Well, dxdiag in the VMware machine tells me, correctly, that DirectDraw acceleration is enabled and works properly, but that Direct3D acceleration and AGP Texture acceleration are not available. This is simply because VMware does not support them, unless I get the experimental 3D support working, but I think that is beyond the scope of this forum.

What I want to know is whether it is possible to get Wonderland games to run despite this lack of 3D acceleration. I get the impression that there is a specific test in their startup which makes them refuse to run unless it is detected, so I am looking for a way to stop this.

Probably the easiest thing that anyone could help me with is finding a fake video driver which claims to be offering 3D acceleration but actually just uses software rendering.

I found out that this experimental 3D acceleration support is hiding in vmx configuration files, but I don't know exactly how to turn it on... :?
