Game Elements 6: Archways - v2.0 - diagonal archways here!

Post by Robbie » Sun Apr 10, 2005 9:11 am

This is what I'd started before but didn't get to...

Basically I've got in mind a series of different styled archways that would fit in seemlessly (I can only hope) with current walls. Useful only really as decoration - little bit of variety to pretty up levels.

This first one is pretty basic & only has the skin for the Garden style of levels.

Doesn't blend in as well as I'd like but I did keep the file size well down - just 15k for the model & 32k for the skin. There's probably scope to make it a larger file size for better detail.

Robbie :D

2 Models
- north/south with deadspot northern end
- east/west with deadspot on western end
1 garden skin

little level over in levels dept.

Hi Robbie,

Your models are wonderlandfull :D I love the arches  Thanks for all your hard work :D :D

I have a question though. I tried using the archways in a level, and this is what I did. I created a new folder in the CustomModels folder. I copied everything from your zip file there (didn't want to risk ruining anything). I renamed the 3ds files to model1 and model2 respectivly. I created a level and used the models. The problem is, that when I test the level the models show up nicely, but they have no texture, they're just white'ish. The jpg file with the garden texture is in the same folder as model1 and model2. Do I need to rename the jpg file too? Or am I doing something else wrong?

Thanks,
Mette

If you've left the jpg files with the original names - Archways - spooky etc then they are too long for the game engine, that's why they don't show up - the name has to be less than 8 characters long.

You need to change them to model1 and model2 and you will need one jpg for each model.

If they had had shorter names you wouldn't have to change them and you would only need one file, but that's getting technical.

Thanks Popo :D

Does that mean that I can take any jpg file and use it with the archways as long as I call it model1, model2 etc.?

No!

Theoretically yes, but it wouldn't look right. You can experiment if you like and see if you get something good. The jpg file would have to be like the original in that it is oblong and has two pictures on it. The easiest way to do it would be to open the jpg in a photo program and replace each half with another picture, then save it with a different name so you don't lose the original.

Keep doing this till you get something you like. :D

Hi everyone,

Sorry – I know it’s been promised a long time ago but here it is finally!

I’ve been working (when the rare opportunity arises) on getting this first Arch model completed & have finally finished it.

As requested I’ve included templates for easy customizing.

* * * * *

There are 3 models for this version including the original plain 9 piece arch, then 2 additional models featuring a single keystone & 3 keystones – I tried variations on these but these models looked best.

And for each Arch type there are 2 models (so 6 in total). The ones shown here are the left-right ones with the deadspot on the left hand side. The up-down ones (couldn’t think of a better explanation) run… well… the other way – deadspot at the front.

Image

* * * * *

There are 2 templates.
The first is for the original plain arch. The second is for the 1 & 3 keystone arches.
You’ll note that the base on either side has been skinned so as to keep the file size to a minimum. I’ll need to do up another model in the next week or so so that the 2 base pieces can be customised separately rather than continuing around the arch. You might notice too that on the plain archway, the texture runs the opposite way to the models with keystones… only realised this when I did up these tests (duh!)… won’t really matter much.

Just note too that the templates included in the file below don’t have the coloured-in areas or the letters – just black & white.

Image

* * * * *

Included in this model pack are introductory skins for each level type from Aztec through Wood – 18 in total. When you open up the directory, you’ll see _a & _b files. A files are for the plain model, B files for the keystone models.

Image

* * * * *

A set of textures has not been included for the arch stones at the moment. They weigh in at 2.5M. If anyone really wants a set, just send me a PM.
These are very easy to reproduce.
Using Paintshop Pro
- take a 256x256 texture (make sure it’s an image on its own – not a layer within another image)
- click on Image > Deformations > Perspective Vertical & adjust the %Difference to 40%
- copy it over to your template as a new layer
- click on the Magic Wand tool & highlight both white areas on either side & erase
- <<note I’m only using version 5 – I don’t imagine things would have changed too much through to version 9…>>

Image

* * * * *

You also might want to mix & match to see the various results. With the above skins I only used floor textures with wall textures of the same level type – there’s no restriction though with what you use.

Have fun. Different models on their way sometime…

Wow Robbie - what a huge amount of work!

Thank you

I only recently started using custom models in some of my levels. All the stuff you have provided is wonderful. My last level (Opal Cave) uses your floor tile templates which I've added my own textures to.

Haven't used archways yet, so I must give them a try. The new ones with the cap stones look really marvellous.

Cap stones! That's it. I couldn't think of what they were called Liz & key stones was the first (& only) thing that came to mind...

Glad you like them Liz :D

Actually I think you are right Robbie - it's keystones for arches, capstones for columns etc.

I'm still trying to get the arch thing to work. I've made version 1 (plain archways) work in the level I've just posted (Opal Cave 3). But no luck with the keystone arches yet. Will keep trying, but if no luck will have to ask for help.

Good heavens Robbie, I come back from holiday to find you've been working overtime!!

How did you find the time to all this with a new baby? Or is this your way of escaping the endless nappy changing.

They are stunning to put it midly. Can't wait to see them used. Must go downloading right now. :D :D

Hope you had fun on your holiday Pauline.

Only been working overtime in very small segments. Nappy changing has come first... along with everything else. Time wise it hasn't really taken all that long to produce although it took a number of weeks from start to finish to put together. I usually take care of the girls while my wife looks after the baby & BTW the youngest girl is still in nappies so I don't miss out on that task. They're up at... rather I should say before the crack of dawn & by the time they're in bed at night I'm pretty much wasted. I can then sit in front of the computer for about 10-15 minutes before I start dropping off...

I'm still going though & working on some arch models that go diagonally. Good to see there's plenty of activity with the others. That Rainbow Star's going to be a real while coming... not to worry. The next arch model should arrive before then

My model has the arch, and i used the custom picture thingy.

All my files are in the zip.

My folder is extracted with the files.

my model and picture are titled, (exactly as shown): "Model1"

The keystone is done

My other stones of the arch are done too.

HI Loof101,

I had the same problem and Popo helped me out. It is something with the .jpg not being assigned in the model file. I attach the aztec arch Popo sent me. Just exchange the .jpg and it will work!

Hi Guys,

Just an update to the Archway model files.
I had wanted to add a diagonal archway for quite a while now & thought I'd better get to & just do it. Like I keep saying, just been really busy... eldest girl came down with chickenpox & she's just getting over it now (just a fews spots left) but now our little boy (4 months old) is coming down with it it seems...

As you can see from the pic it turned out OK. It lines up nicely with adjacent walls & will look a whole lot better if you do up the template with some nice artwork rather than my spot colour test run shown here. The texturing is not as complex as I made the last ones - just didn't have the time & besides it allows you to doodle over the whole lot... try it anyway.

In the zip file are the following goodies.

***********************************************************
AC3D files
- single arch model
- model used for top 2 images below (you might need to dig out the image files from GE07 if you haven't already downloaded them)

3DS files for 2 variations. Pop these into your model folder & rename them to Modelx

Template files for texturing
- 424x320
- 646x480 - after texturing pop these also into you model folder & rename as per usual.

Sample level & model folder
***********************************************************

Hope someone can get some use out of it.

Just looking at the level image above there you might want to keep in mind what is & isn't visible when texturing. Might need to do some adjusting...

You're doing some absolutely brilliant model work Robbie. That arch is awesome, even without textures. You're getting so good you'll soon be selling on Turbosquid. 8) :D :D

Sorry to hear about the chickenpox outbreak. Poor little Simi just getting it. He might not get as many spots at his age, my youngest, Chris, got it very young and only had a few spots. It will probably end up going round all of them, one after the other. I hope you and your wife have both had it, it can be rather nasty in adulthood.

Hmmn... that would be real nice Pauline... at the moment I'm probably at the skill level where I'd actually have to pay people to download my stuff  making money is still someway off

Simi doesn't have it too bad really. A few on each arm, one or 2 one his ankles, 2 strategically placed in his nappy, 4 or so on his tummy, 8 on his back & probably 15-20 on his head including 3 or 4 on his eyelids. It doesn't seem to have bothered him much yet. Little Lusi-Ann has been down in Sydney with Tokasa's sister for the last 2 months now ( ) & is due to come back this week. I've been doing the bulk of the caring while they've been sick as neither Tokasa or any of her family have had chickenpox before. All in all (besides a lack of sleep) we're doing OK.

I'll get at least one more model out this week - another thing I've been wanting to do for a little while - along the water line of thought...
... never know... I might surprise us all & actually get it done.

And still waiting for your house...

It has been a while hasn't it... the model you were working on but for one reason & another were unable to finish... it's ok dear... I know there's been a lot happening lately - won't even touch the avatar/sig debate (like what you've been doing there)

Gave Simi a bath tonight & the count I gave you above can pretty much double now.

Oh, that house, er, chapel.  Pretty much given up on that one.

Poor little Simi, you'll soon not be able to see him for the spots. It'll be a wonder if your wife doesn't catch it herself, it's infectious for quite a while, until the scabs fall off I think. You'll be buying calamine lotion by the bucket full. Oh, I am so glad I don't have to go through all that again.

Keep up the good work on the models Robbie, I'm working on some graphics for your diagonal arch right now. I like the way you've set out the template for it, it makes it easier to see what it will look like when finished, and you can even put lettering on it to follow the arch. Nice. 8) :D :D

Sounds great!

Let me know when you've got something done if you don't post it here. I rarely go into the custom levels area as I don't get a chance to play much these days... the last time I was faithfully downloading & playing all the levels released there were only about 20 available! Now we're up to what 3000+)

I'm way behind on that count.

Looking forward to your next posting

Well it was for a level for someone, but I'll try and PM it to you to look at seeing as you don't do the levels. :D :D

EDIT

Couldn't PM it. I'll email it instead. :D :D

I was wondering why there are only 3 bits of pink on the template (for under the arch), so I had a look with Alt-X to see what colour they were underneath.

Looks like you didn't map those bits.

No matter cos they don't show, unless you go Alt-Xing like me. Takes me back to when I was little and my dad would only paper halfway down the wall behind the settee because it didn't show.
_______________

I just had an idea.

Little notes could be mapped to the underneath bits, as clues in levels, or riddles to solve.

Ok, I think my brain needs a rest.

Thanks for that Pauline
I loaded it into my 'level' (for want of a better word) & I have to say it looks brilliant!

I had considered doing those last bits purely for the reason you mentioned then thought whether anyone would even use it... wouldn't be too hard to modify the existing template to map those bits.

Are you serious your dad did that???

Deadly serious    I'm ashamed to say. It was all to save having to buy another roll, waste not want not. It comes from having lived through rationing in the war I suppose. I grew up thinking everyone did it.

I mapped those bits just to see if they were visible, but they aren't so there's no point in uploading it, unless anyone wants it of course.
