New Level (Advanced) - GTA1

Post by Liz Mayhew » Sun May 01, 2005 2:41 pm

This is my first attempt at adding custom models - you can see by one of the models which went wrong, but I've left it as it gave me the idea for the level. Also it took me ages to get the file zipped, so I don't know if it's worked. I've also used JG's UFO idea at the start.

This is the start of a story series (hopefully 6 episodes). Fingers crossed, here goes:

I've tried to unzip these models but it just won't work, keeps trying to overwrite existing models. I just got columns when I opened the level.
Sorry

I was able to unzip the model file okay! The cars are all there, I think! The ones on the left are hysterical the way they're all piled up - looks like a big accident on the freeway! Looks like it's going to be a fun one to play - I'll get back to you!! :D

This is really STRANGE! I downloaded it & put it in my model file without any problems. I wonder what the difference is!

The files aren't already in a folder, that might be causing some conflicts if you have some files floating around your CustomModels folder.

Liz, you should have put the files in a folder. You must have had them in a folder to make them work in your level, cos it's the folder name you use in the editor.

Could you either upload them again in the folder, or tell us what the folder name is you used in the editor, please. :D

If you click save when you download and then extract at the same location, it automatically makes a folder. Then move the folder to CustomModels.

If you click open and unzip it straight into CustomModels it doesn't.

I found this out when we were having trouble with double folders eons ago.

You must have done it the first way. :?:

Well Popo, I don't understand either, because I did have the models in a folder named GTAm. When I tried to zip this file Winzip told me I had a wrong file name, so I called it GTAm.zip which it accepted. When I first posted this on the forum it came up as GTAm.zip.zip. So I took it off and tried again. Made a zip file on the desktop and dragged GTAm to this. Put this zip file back into RTWD Custom Models and uploaded it from there. This seemed to work. Oh well, back to the drawing board. :?

GTA2 coming up, and should work as it has a standard model file from Steve in it.

Liz :D :D

PS: Have tried zipping the GTAm folder again - here it is:

There's still no folder inside that zip file. It doesn't matter if people know how to get round it and make their own folder.

I don't know why you're all using WinZip when there's a perfectly good zip tool with Windows. I think that is what's causing the problems. Tiana was having the same sort of trouble zipping her files.

Each to their own I suppose.

Popo - I have Windows XP, but there doesn't seem to be any zip or compression facility. I've followed all the instructions very carefully, but my file options menu doesn't include this. My son also has XP and it's there on his computer, but missing on mine. I'm still working on this problem ...

Sorry everyone. Will get back to you when I have some solution.

Does installing WinZip overwrite Windows zip tool? I know this happens with other things, you might be able to change it in Control Panel. :D

Liz,

I unzipped this directly into my custom models, usually I delete the last part to prevent a double folder. This time I left it as it was and it worked fine for me. Still got to play it btw, let you know when I do.

I have XP too and use the Windows Zip, if you remove Winzip and use your XP disk, you should be able to install the Windows zip from that.
Other than that, I can only suggest you go to Windows Update and download from there.

Good luck.

HELP ! S.O.S. Liz .... I couldn't get all the coins in the first bit and when I finally figured that out I locked myself in

Can I have a nudge in the right direction please - looks great, would love to get a bit further.

Liz, this is another toughie! I don't know how many times I had to start over. Then I finally got through and couldn't find you know what! Tricky, tricky, tricky! You even had Peegue saying what sounded like cussing. But it was a great level and much fun. Very rewarding to finally get home!

Great fun, Thanks! :D

p.s. - I down loaded the zip file again. When it asked me if I wanted to make a new folder, I clicked yes and named it GTAm - this time everything worked.

Kazza, and anyone else having problems

*****SPOILER FOR FIRST PART*****

Collect the coins by the spikes in the very first room. When the kaboom opens the blue gate again, run down the top side of the coins and remove all from the switch rightwards. Open the gate if necessary and go down into next room. Push the metal box back up 2 spaces, down 1 space and left 2 spaces. Get out of the way a bit and the kaboom will open the gate and go into the next room. Quickly collect the remaining coins. Open the gate for yourself and run right to the conveyor switch. By now the kaboom will have opened the pink gate so you can just walk out across the conveyor to the next bit.

*****END OF SPOILER*****

Let me know if there are any more problems.

BTW: Thanks Popo and Maureen for your input. Have tried your advice with no luck. Still working on it.

Hi Lizzie - I have been playing with the first kaboom this morning - to no avail! Was just about to ask for a hint - thank goodness you have posted one, I will try it again

I use Winzip and have no problems (Windows 2000 - not sure if that makes a difference?) I am no expert on zipping models but here's what I do:

Create a new custom models folder in explorer and call it GTAm - copy your model files into it.

In the editor on your level, press shift M and type in GTAm - save, etc.

In explorer again, right click on GTMa and zip up in normal way (it will zip it up in custom models directory automatically).

Post your level and zip file in normal way - should be as easy as that. You shouldn't have to tick any folder boxes at all.

Good luck with your next go

Did you create the cars yourself? I liked the one through the wall - reminded me of a restaurant I'd been to :P

Well done Lizzie - more please

Hi Liz,

Reaqlly enjoyed this level - even if I couldn't see your cars.
I'm not too good at the folder making business. If it doesn't do what it's meant to do, then I'll manage without ! ! ! ! !

Loved the sokoban bit at the end. Had a few problems with ole pony-tail in the beginning, but soon got him whipped into shape.

Now waiting for episode #2.

THanks for the hint Liz - made it out with a coin missing somehow, will look for it later.
btw, I tried your 2nd zip thingy and it didn't work, I put the files in a new folder called GTAm manually and .. Surprise ! .. looked like a pile up ! Got 3 motors like that on my drive (not) :D :D
Nice puzzle - liked the buttons 'n' boxes bit the best

Thanks

Kazza :) :)
