Forum ReOrganization

Post by Midnight Synergy » Tue Aug 02, 2005 7:43 pm

Hi folks,

Sorry I’ve been so quiet for a while... life tends to get in the way of things, sometimes. :D

I have a suggestion for a possible forum re-organization. Since you folks are the ones using this forum, I would welcome any feedback you might have in regards to these changes. (There will be a number of new ideas, features, changes, etc. that I’ll be rolling out gradually on both the forum and the main game site over the next few months.)

First, here’s the intended result of this change, so you know where I’m coming from. When the forum first started it was a rather small place, and discussion was squarely placed on (a) Wonderland help/issues/solutions and (b) custom levels. Since that time I’m happy to see that many of you have also formed lasting (alas, not in all cases) friendships and use this forum just to chat and visit.

I think that’s great, but I also think that it can create issues if the forum is too full of chat, and people looking for Wonderland specific discussion can’t threads that interest them easily.

To keep the “community” aspects of the forum, as well as make sure the “games related” side of it remains smooth I suggest the creation of an off-topic area for the board. This is where you could post your jokes, your rainbow star announcements, your “hello I’m leaving” or “hello I’m back” threads, or just other general chat that doesn’t really have anything to do with the games. I would also ask that people try to keep threads outside of the off-topic area on-topic as much as possible, rather than having a thread about a level solution morph into a discussion about petunia arrangements (just an example, don’t throw anything).

The same would apply to the custom level section. Some levels are meant as serious action and puzzle challenges, others are “just for fun” (e.g. the equivalent of a birthday card for another member). Again, I would propose split in the forums so people can more easily find the type of content that they’re looking for.

Right now there is a single category (“The Wonderland Game Series”) with the forums
General Discussion, Classic Levels, Deluxe Levels, Custom Content, Highscores

I’d suggest moving to three categories, each with several forums:

The Wonderland Games
-General Wonderland Discussion
-Level Solutions
-World Highscores

Custom Levels
-Puzzle/Action Levels
-Kids Levels
-Just-for-Fun Levels
-Custom Content

Other
-Off-Topic Discussion
-Other Games and Puzzles

General Wonderland Discussion would be technical issues, polls about what voice effect you like, etc. Wonderland related! No snapping at each other’s ankles! No petunia arrangements! *ducks flying rocks*
Level Solutions would be for the three official games. Obviously a newcomer might ask a question about a custom level here from time to time, but that should be ok.
World Highscores - as before.

Puzzle/Action Levels - your standard “serious” levels. (For lack of a better word). Would combine both “classic” and “deluxe” levels. The vast majority of players play deluxe, and one can still see from the level extension if a level is only for the classic version.
Kids Levels - levels that you’ve designed specifically with younger players in mind.
Just-For-Fun - birthday levels, congratulation levels, country flag levels, etc
Custom Content - as before

Off Topic - chit/chat, jokes, family pictures, tornado warnings, etc. Anything would go here, although I’d still ask people to respect and tolerate each other (as much as possible) and keep your language in check. It is still meant to be a board that is safe for kids to visit.
Other Games - people seem to like to share games, puzzles, etc that they find on the net. This would be a forum just for that.

Perhaps I’ll just leave it at that for now, and get your feedback on it. There are plenty of other related issues, but let’s take it one step at a time.

Cheers,
P

Hello Patrick, It's good to see you again!!!!

I think that is a good idea, It will fit the needs of everybody and we will all know exactly where we need to go etc....

I don't really see a problem with the way the "custom levels" is right now... But on the other hand It is a really good idea you had about splitting the levels up into different categories, There are some people in this forum who like the harder levels and some who more enjoy the easier ones/kids levels....

You're on to something Patrick :D :D :D I wouldn't dare think of throwing anything atcha except maybe a tomato??? hehe just kidding I actually thought your comment about "petunia arrangements" was quite funny....

You should be so proud there has been no arguements lately, We've been a happy bunch of wonderlanders lately for the most part :D :D :D

Well there's my thoughts on things, Take care you!!!

Mainly I think it's a good proposal, Patrick.
I would like to make only one modification. I wouldn't make a difference between Puzzle/Action and Just-for-Fun-Levels.
Where will you set the borderline? The same level could be a real challenge for someone and an easy walkthrough for someone else. I'm a bit afraid of discussions of the type You're not allowed to post in the Puzzle/Action-part because your levels aren't tricky enough.
It sure won't become too complex if all custom levels (with exception of the kids-levels) are posted in one category.

:D :D :D I agree its a good proposal, But how would you determine the difference between an action level and a just for fun level. I agree with what Lutz says, There can be an action level but it only takes a minute to do, On the other hand it might not be a walk through for some. Anyway, Patrick, I'm sure you'll do whats best. Good Luck. :D :D :D

Maybe the name "Just For Fun" is bad - what I mean by this section are the type of levels that aren't really traditional puzzle/action levels, but Birthday card levels, Showing off weird visuals (although we haven't had any new ones of that type in a while), World Flag levels, Story Levels, etc. Any proposals?

So you're saying you'll have one area for custom levels and then another one for tributes, birthdays etc... ????

It is hard to establish someones if a levels hard or not from the person who makes the level this way it would be hard to know if the levels hard or not so we wouldn't know which area to submit it in.... I know I've made several levels I tell everyone they are sooo easy and then next thing I know people are needing help with it.....

I think that, That might very well be a good idea have the custom levels and then also add one for tributes etc...

Whatya think??

:D :D :D :D :D :D I know that you will make the right decision and I'm here for ya :P

I think it's a gem of an idea Pat.

It would certainly help members find what they're after a whole lot easier & restore a bit of order to the forum. Reminds me too I should get cracking & contribute to something that isn't off-topic

GREAT IDEAS :!:  :!:
I really like the idea of a "kids level" section, I know Emily & I would be fighting over "Mommys computer" :D

I think it's a great idea Patrick. It would help people know exactly where to go. :D It might even head off a few disagreements. By "Just for Fun" I assumed you meant special levels like the birthday greetings and visuals. Would that also be the place for levels submitted in a contest such as the Idjit Competition? It would make sense to place them there. What do you mean by "story levels"? Is that levels produced in a series, such as jg's "Popo" levels?
Having an area for off topic chat is also a good idea. There have recently a lot of disagreements about what is acceptable in General Discussion. I think this would solve the problems rather neatly. We have formed a community of friends here and I think it's important to the forum to continue to encourage that aspect of it. It makes it a place you want to continue to visit, rather than just drop in occassionally to see if there are any new levels. It makes this forum unique.
Anyway, that's my two cents worth. :D

Hi Patrick,

I think your idea is great :D I agree that "just for fun" is a bad name (all levels are just for fun in one way or another   ). How about calling it "Other levels"? Then we would have
* Action/puzzle levels
* Kids levels
* Other levels

If you're planning on reorganizing all the old threads to fit the new structure, it will take a lot of moving threads around. I'm still willing to help if you want it :D

I totally agree with Kiki & Lutz ... people's perception of "fun and easy v puzzle/action" are so diverse there is immediate potential to start a riot when .... heaven forbid... some poor soul posts a puzzle in the fun section   (Aren't puzzles fun anyway?)
I've only made one Birthday tribute which proved to be a tough puzzle for many and I'll be drawing my pension before I figure out some of the Valentines levels !!

The vast majority of levels are puzzle/action, even when intended as a tribute for whatever reason - we all have the option of announcing in the preamble the level is "just for fun" to mark a special occassion.

In reality, I'm guessing ALL Wonderlanders will play ALL levels, whatever forum they were posted in (I know I will  )

That said, I do see some logic in having a "kids" forum for our younger members and it might even encourage some of the regulars to make simpler levels to post there.

My vote is one for custom levels and one for custom levels (kids). Keep it simple. You may have answered your own question Patrick by identifying there are so few "just for fun" levels and visuals posted ?

Everything else - off topic forum, solutions, etc etc ... spot on

Hi Patrick

It should just be a 2-way split - Custom Levels and Kids Levels. I've made birthday and flag levels which are also puzzle challenges, so wouldn't know which section to put them in.

A Kids Levels section is definitely a good idea, as there are often people asking for easy levels to keep their kids entertained in the holidays.

Yes, ma'm. ;)

I do want to wait a little longer to make sure most people have had a chance to voice their opinions.

Mette - some moving help would definitely be appreciated. Thanks for the offer!

It sounds like the "Just-for-fun" might not be a good idea. I'll ponder a bit longer on that.

BTW, another suggestion by a forum member was to have an adult only section - e.g. for racier jokes, etc., that folks would need to "sign up" for. I will actually say "No" to that suggestion - while I do think it has its merits (including giving people an outlet if they feel the need to rant/rave/etc) I really don't think the Wonderland forum is the right board for that - the discussions in the adult section is bound to affect the tone of the "regular" forum.

(speaking of kids vs adults - some of the jokes lately have started veering toward off-colour jokes again. Can I ask the posters to voluntarily go through your recent posts and delete jokes that you don't think would be appropriate for, let's say, a seven year old)

Any time Patrick :D Well actually not any time   . I'm not home in week 33 (visiting Lillie and Maureen :D ) and I'll only have limited computer time in week 34 (helping my Dad paint his house  ). I think it's a wonderful idea! I've been a member since Dec 2003, and only posted 3 times--when I desperately needed help I couldn't find through other threads. I have read many of the discussions and never really "felt the need" to jump in before. I for one would really like to be able to come in and search for an answer without getting all caught up in the "chats". Everyone is so helpful and you seem to be like a family, but not all of us are comfortable in a chat room atmosphere. Thanks for the opportunity to input.

re-organization of forum

Post by ohbehave » Thu Aug 04, 2005 12:34 pm

patrick...i also agree with kiki, lutz and kaz...everyone has their own perception of what a difficult and easy level is...whats hard for one person, may not be considered hard by another..and as a level maker who does do alot of visuals, they can also have a real challenge involved..i think the two way split would be good(custom levels/kids levels) i still believe that when someone enters the discussion area, and sees a topic that doesnt interest them, they should go on to a different thread..it might be to tricky for some if you get too many catigories going..

on another note.. i saw your post on the joke section..while i dont post any jokes in there, i have read alot of them, and i havent seen any that are offensive...and what would a 7 year old be doing in the thread anyway..most of them cant read that well, and there is such a thing as parental control...if i had a small child their need would only be to go into the kids levels to play, not to read the posts...well, thats just my simple opinion, for what its worth....thank you.. :)

I read this as you think it should be puzzle/action & kids,

but here you say puzzle/action & just for fun. Did you make a typo in the last quote or did I misunderstand you?

Good Morning Patrick, Had grandkids staying and this is the first time I've even seen my computer

Yes - it's a great idea. Go ahead and get it done. Know it will involve a lot of work for you and Mette,
but reading all the comments above, I'm sure it will all be greatly appreciated by every one

Also agree with the 2-way split for custom levels. Anything else would probably be too confusing.
Personally, I love the "kids" levels. I don't remember you posting any guidelines for the ages of kids.
I think I qualify at any age, as do most all Wonderlanders

Hey Patrick,

My selections would be:

The Wonderland Games
-General Wonderland Discussion
-Level Solutions
-World Highscores

Custom Levels
-Puzzle/Action Levels
-Kids Levels
-Custom Content

Chat
-Jokes
-Pictures
-Misc. (Congrats, Birthdays, Comings and Goings, Petunia arranging.)

The Chat catagory wouldn't necessarily need sub-catagories.

Janet, I don't think I'll do a separate "jokes" section yet - (a) it is likely the most contentious of the threads for some people and (b) it seems to work well as is with all jokes in a single thread in what will be the off-topic section.

As for the jokes - I think it's a fine line, and everyone's "standards" will be slightly different. Certainly none of the jokes right now are really bad. But they are getting more suggestive, have implied swear-words, etc. I would just ask people to be extra-conservative here (although you - or I - might not personally feel that way). I want to err on the side of caution here, as I do know from several members that they are getting uncomfortable letting their kids/grand-kids on the forum... I want to keep the place as kid-friendly as possible. I think the off-topic segregation will do a lot in that direction, but would ask people to also keep that in mind when posting jokes etc.

You'll also be starting to see movements of posts as the new categories open. This will take at least a few days, during which you might not be able to access certain threads or categories. Please bear with me for that period. You might also see "mette" pop up as a moderator for some time, which is a necessity during the move.
