New Level(Advanced)-Star House ***Fixed/Easier Download***

Post by janetgalle » Fri Jul 09, 2004 2:10 pm

Attention: Corrected instructions and downloads. 7/27/04

The way I understand it is:

1. I make a custom house.
2. I name my house (house1)
3. I make a new folder in the custom houses folder.
4. I name this folder jg58201
5. I put (house1) in the jg58201 folder.
6. I Zip it up and upload it with the level file.

If some one wants to play the level I made AND be able to see "Starhouse" instead of the default house they have to:

1. They unzip the jg58201.zip file into their CustomHouses folder.
2. They download the level and will be able to see the "StarHouse" (house1) when they play the level.

Or they don't have to bother with all that extra stuff and can just play the game without seeing the custom content.

here goes.

Janet --

Nice house! I had to rename file StarHouse.jpg.jpg (which is what was in the zip file) to house.jpg to get it to work. I placed it in a new folder called jg58201 in the custom houses folder and it came up well.

Thanks for the work and problem solving for all of us.

Hi Sfseaman,

Steve, can you check for us EXACTLY what you have called the .jpg file and where is is located please.

I cannot see the starhouse when I play this level

I have created a sub-folder jg58201 within the CustomHouses folder.
I have renamed the file to both house.jpg and house1.jpg (cos I thought it had to have a number to match the house type used within the level)

BUT I still don't get the correct star house - it does look good in the folder though

Cheers,

Hi all...

Sorry about all this. This is tricky. Steve is right. I went back to play Starhouse and it had reverted to the default house. (Because I messed with some filenames) So I had to go to CustomHouses, then to jg58201, and change the name of starhouse to house1. Then it worked in the level. I just figured out ( ) that my folder jg58201, can have only 4 houses in it, and they have to be named house1, house2, house3, and house4.....so that the editor knows which house I want to use.

Please don't let my "idjitness" stop you from trying to download these custom items. It is great fun!

Hey Janet -- you've been the only one brave enough to try this and are working out the kinks for all of us.

Malcdelsol -- I have a folder named jg58201 under CustomHouses folder under the main Return To Wonderland Deluxe folder. In that folder I have one file named house1.jpg You might try pulling STARHOUSE.LV5 up in the editor. When I did that there was a message that read:

"HOUSE:JG58201"

at the bottom of the screen. If this is not there you may want to double check that you have the updated version of STARHOUSE.LV5

I am assuming you are running some version of windows so that it will make no difference whether the folder name is capitalized or not. If you are running some other operating system in which file and folder names are case sensitive, you may need to name your folder JG58201.

Anyway, that's all the thoughts I have at the moment. Keep us all posted so that we can figure out the best way to do this.

Again, thanks Janet for being the "guinea pig" for all of us.

Hi Janet & Steve,

Firstly, many thanks Janet for getting this matter up and being discussed and for your prompt reply Steve.

BUT am I getting a little frustrated with this or what :?

The sub-folder I have created within CustomHouses is jg58201 (I am using latest Windows XP so 'jg' is the same as 'JG')

I have the file in there called house1.jpg

I have HOUSE:JG58201 come up when I look at the level within the editor.

I cant get it to work though  Mind you I have also created within a folder called CustomVoices a STINKY.WAV file saying 'Malcolm' and that don't work either.

Anyone got any help I'd be obliged

Hi Malc,

Sorry for all the confusion.

This is what I did.

I deleted the all the versions of Star House level.
I downloaded the StarHouse(Advanced) level.
I made a new folder in custom folders called jg58201
I unzipped starhouse.jpg.zip into the jg58201 folder.
THEN I changed the name of Starhouse.jpg to just house1
And finally, then I could play the level with the Starhouse instead of the default house.

I should have just called it house1 in the first place. (I think)

Hope this helps...........

Hi SharonM,

Sorry your having problems as well but in a  sort of way I'm glad it's not just me

I just created a level that has Sinky and Janet's house in it - thats all - I did Shift & H and now have HOUSE:JG58201 in the bottom left corner of the level .

Guess what - I still get the default house 1 style

I don't know

Malc, is the .jpg file named 'house1' without a space, cos it won't work if there is a space. The name of the folder has to be exactly the same as the name in the editor but apart from that I can't see why it won't work. :?

Hi jg,

I think we were posting at the same time then

Don't apologise for any confusion - I've only got into this today and after reading the info pages was fairly OK with what I had to do.

I still am - it just don't work for me    but then as I said earlier neither does the changing voices facility :!:

Anyone got that to work yet :?:

I've just downloaded it myself to have a look. The file was called 'house1.jpg' and it should be just 'house1'.

When I click on the jg58201 folder it opens like in My Pictures with a filmstrip. Every other custom house just has 'house1' as the name, that one had 'house1.jpg'.

I changed it to 'house1' and I can see the house in the level.

Gee Malc, I hope it works for you!!!! Like I said. Just delete all the starhouse levels, and zips and anything to do with it and start from scratch.

I hope to do better next time.

Hi All,

Thanks popo.

IT WORKED

The files within the subdirectory must not have any suffix - in this case .jpg

AND GUESS WHAT.......

I renamed my STINKY.WAV file to just STINKY (within a directory called CustomVoices) and it works as well

When I switch to Stinky within a level it now says 'Malcolm' - mind you it's a fairly DEEP voice

NOW... who is going to tell Patrick that not only is his Online Manual wrong BUT also the info given on the Secret B web page :?:  :?:

Gee this is fascinating. I can see why people are frustrated. In my customhouses folder it is labeled house1.jpg It did occur to me that windows has an option that will not display extensions if it recognizes the file type. I don't know if that is the issue here but might explain why the original zip showed up on my system as starhouse.jpg.jpg and why for some people they need the file name to show up as house1 with no extension.

You can check your system by double clicking on the My Computer icon or open any folder on their system then go to View - Folder Options on the top menu. Then click on the View tab. Right under the Hidden Files folder icon is a check box for hiding file extensions if the file type is known.

Does this explain the differences we are experiencing?

You won't believe this.....I tried making a level with your shop...........and all I get is the default house. :!: :!: :!: :!:

When I open your folder there is a picture (the four parts) of your shop.
When I open testhouse or jg58201 there is a little icon that I have to click on to get the picture. Is that the problem?

OOOHHH, this is sooooo much fun!

Way to go Malc!!!!!

No voices for me yet, except for the ones in my head that aren't very polite!!!!!!!!

In my view options I have filmstrip so that I can see the house that's in there. Perhaps because of that I've uploaded the picture and not the file. I'll change it and upload it again.

I hope we're all learning from out mistakes.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the info - for XP users once you have clicked on a folder goto 'Tools', then 'Folder Options', then the 'View' Tab.

My 'Hide Extensions for known file types' has a tick in it - this I assume is the default as I never even knew it existed.

This, as Steve points out, has I assume been the cause for all of the confusion & frustration. :? :?

OK Patrick, maybe your instructions are not incorrect - just not detailed enough regarding this matter of file extensions

OK - I now have to go and re-record 'Malcolm' in a much higher voice

I've uploaded it again while the icon was on view instead of the filmstrip but the actual file is just the same. I don't know if it will work. But I dowloaded the testhouse again to see what was in the zip file, and your house to see what was in that zip file and there the same as what's in my zip file, so I don't understand it. :?

Malcdelsol --

You're right, this option is selected by default. What can I say, old dog, new tricks, etc. I've never gotten past by old DOS days and always like to see the extensions on my files. It only occured to me that this would be the problem after hearing some of the strange differences above.

Hopefully it is all clear as mud now. We certainly have all learned a lot in the last few hours.

Thanks again Janet for your level, and I'm glad you originally uploaded the house as starhouse.jpg because I suspect that the confusion arose as we all renamed it and it's really good to get this clarified early on.

Finally did it. Phew!

Still haven't got the car though.

I'll get back to you on the level.

Thanks to all who posted, it was a great help.

I finally got it to work. In 98SE, you have to have the file extension listed (I think). Anyway, not sure what I did, I just kept playing with it until I got it. Love the house, jg. Thanks everyone for your help. :D

As with everything else, it took me awhile but now I have:

Papa (Peegue), Nana (Qookie), Jordan (Stinky) and Dylan (Loof)

You should have seen their faces the first time they heard it!!
