The dreaded service pack 2

Post by popo » Thu Aug 19, 2004 3:20 pm

I've just received my Automatic Update to install SP2.

I've been to the Microsoft Website and read all there is to read about it. Apparantly some programs work differently or stop working after it's installed, and the list is as long as my arm. Some of them being Word, Works Suite, Norton Antivirus, Photo Shop Elements.

Has anyone installed this yet? If so are you experiencing problems?

It does say to back up all your personal data before installing, what do they mean by personal? And do you have to back it up to CD or what?

I was looking forward to this coming out, but it looks like it's going to cause more problems than it solves.

By personal it would mean all .doc programs, all email, bookmarks or favorites, all pictures, all songs etc. that you like and would be disappointed to lose.

AND Wonderland game criteria that is important to you. I would and do back up my custom folder as well as my .pla file occasionally as it is. Without the .pla file, any start over would mean all games appear unplayed. Without my custom folders, I would have to sort through all the games again to decide which I wanted.

Of course this new update doesn't mean that we would lose any of that. It is like any update that should be smart enough to leave all personal files alone.

The warning is more the common warning and practice to always make sure your favorite everything is backed up because that data can be lost sometimes. And maybe there are instances when an update does affect a computer to the point that starting over is all that can be done.

We are choosing to not install the update for now. A friend of mine who is computer illiterate, I am installing the update on his. He's had way too many viruses and malware that I've had to help him clean. He has hardly any extra software on his computer since new so reinstalling isn't a problem with him.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Has anyone else got their SP2 yet? I've got my Automatic Updates on but it still hasn't started downloading yet. I got the little balloon telling me it was ready to download, I clicked 'download now', and that's the last I've heard from it. I'm getting fed up now so I sent for the CDRom. :?

Hey Popo,

I have downloaded the Servie Pack and the most I can say about it is that it always "double checks" whether or not you want to save a level. You have to hit either save or cancel. No biggie, just one more small annoying step. I didn't do any research on it, and when I had the little balloon pop up saying I had an update, I just clicked install. I always do that though. I figure if Microsoft says I need an update for my computer, I had better update it. I didn't pay $1200.00 for it to crash or anything!!!!
Plus I must say, I am not all that brite when it comes to computers. I know little things, but not a whole lot.

But, like I said before, I haven't had any problems with the new service pack. It seems fine to me. Hope that helps you some.

I don't know if there's something wrong here, but my SP2 still hasn't started downloading. Is there a queue or something? Does it do it in alphabetical order or what? I told it to start downloading on the 25th August and it still has started yet!! :? Usually when there's an update it starts downloading as soon as I click 'download now', I don't understand it. I also found a virus on my computer the other day, the only one in 5 years of computing. It was in a temporary internet file. I got rid of it sharpish.

Hmm... I don't know. Did you just try canceling the download and then actually going to the widows update website and starting all over. Sometimes that will help. Cosidering that you have been trying to download since Aug. 25th?? I would just cancel it and start over. I doubt that the virus had anything to do with it.

I've sent for the CDRom, I'll install it from that. Downloading it would take forever anyway, I'm not on the internet for long at a time. Never mind eh. :D

SP2

Post by clasjaz » Mon Oct 18, 2004 10:50 pm

Mine installed automatically when I shut down on 10/16. That's NEVER happened before, but I didn't worry about it cuz I always install the SPs anyway.

Now, I'm getting garbled sound when I play Wonderland. Aside from that, I haven't noticed any adverse effects.

Any suggestions on how to fix the sound?

I installed SP2 from the CD last week. I noticed that Wonderland got a bit jerky but that could have been those particular levels. I did a disk clean up and a defrag and it seems to be ok now.

The pop-up blocker is every bit as annoying as the pop-ups though. :?

I got Norton Antivirus 2005 at the same time and that keeps telling me it's detected a Trojan Horse intrusion every time I open the Fax Console. It's because the Fax Console opens a port when it starts, and the Antivirus tries to block it. I hope it doesn't mean it's blocking my faxes.

Also, whenever I've had my Works Task Launcher open and then subsequently shut down my PC, the task manager pops up telling me it's still running. This could be hours after I've closed it myself. :?

Isn't Windows wonderful?

You can turn the pop up blocker off. (See below) I have a Google Tool bar that includes a pop up blocker that works quite well.

I haven't had any trouble with any of my programs....except after SP2
my OutLook Express would try to block all incoming attatchments, but I found I could turn that off too.

Good too see you got it installed tho!

Oh BTW did Patrick ever solve your attatchments in a PM problem? I can't do it either, I always get the same messages you do.

The pop up blocker's ok, I suppose I'll get used to it. You can turn it off for certain web sites. I turned it off for the forum cus it was stopping the pop up that tells me when I've got PMs.

My attachments thingy still hasn't been rectified. Sometimes I can send them, sometimes I can't. It must depend on what's already in the folders of the people you're sending them to. I always delete the ones that have been sent so my boxes are never full.

I've been having some trouble sending attachment with emails since getting Norton 2005. It takes forever to scan outgoing emails. I'll try using webmail instead.
