I think there is something wrong with the picture Cathy. I see there is an attachment but there is no picture, only a little red cross.

What means exactly "neck of the woods"? Your neighbourhood, area, country?

My cousin sometimes also let make bales when it's not that much because he doesn't have such machine and it is more expensive. Those are round bales but there also are square bales here but that machines are too heavy for the ground here.
And there are two different ways: To dry the grass about one day and then in plastic, or hay that has to dry at least three days but then no plastic is needed

Edit: http://maps.google.nl/maps?ie=UTF8&t=h& ... 01762&z=19
Bottom right you can see the round bales in light green plastic

That's odd cuz I can see the picture but I will delete and upload it again. "Neck of the woods" means my area.

We are in the middle of a thunder storm so if I loose power this may take me a bit but I'll try to get it fixed.

Edit: Can you see the picture now?

Edit again: Is this your place and do you raise cattle?

Yes. Such machines do we have here too but only for hay. Those make little bales which a man can carry, but what I meant are much bigger.

round baler:

Self loading wagon (my cousin's one is much older and smaller)

It where my cousin lives and has a farm. I live 4 kilometer from there.

Yep now the picture is there!

We have mostly like what you are showing Marinus. The farmers here use mostly the huge round bales. They do make some small bales they sell to folks that have horses.

So amazing how huge that machinery is. And whoa baby expensive too!! One of those huge tractors and all the implements that go on it cost more than a few houses do!

What Robyn said is very true, expensive, and most of the people around here only have a few horses here and there so they use the smaller bales, easier to handle and store. We also have some in our area that use the round bales mostly for cattle but not many that use the big square bales like that. I've seen a few hobby people that use the ity bitty balers, they look funny, although I'd rather handle those than the ones we have too

I'm glad the picture came thru better for ya. I'll have to check into your plastic processing that you talked about.

Sorry for getting off topic again.

I never seen a round bale till I moved here to NC. Growing up we used the square baler also. I remember stacking them on the wagon then again later in the barn. The most fun was in the hay loft........shhhh....I'll never tell.

It 's the off-topic section here isn't it?

Tractors are expensive yes but as expensive as a few houses??? That's very much I think. Most farmers here don't have such very big and new equipment.

You talked about hay Cathy, but on that picture seems straw to me, just like my picture of the big square bales. I said the little bales were only for hay but indeed, here in NL also much for straw. But that straw is mostly not used to feed the animals but for them to lay on.

But if I understand well: To bring the grass with a self loading wagon on a big heap, and then plastic over it to conserve it, that is not usually with you?

Yes that is straw but it was the only picture I could find. We use the same baler for hay and straw. Straw for bedding and hay to feed with.

Yes some people here use plastic to cover the round bales like you do but they don't cover the wagons with the plastic like you described.
And first you make us curious he?
oh to be young again and yes even foolish  Straw/hay can smart Image
