What 3D model application should I use

Post by lizwiz » Fri Feb 08, 2008 5:05 pm

I have just started playing with 3D models and I am using Blender because it's free, and I can't afford to buy one. Can I use it for Wonderland models?

You would have to be able to save or export the files as 3ds files for them to be any use in Wonderland. Look in the file menu, or help menu to see if you can do that. :)

Thanks Pauline! It would appear that the answer is no for what I have now. These files are .3D2. What is the main 3Ds app?

Don't worry I've just found it - and there's no way I can afford it. :( Guess I'll just have to stick to textures.

I'm not sure if you are interested but there is this program that is freeware http://www.wings3d.com/index.php

I sure hope you find something that works for you. I don't personally know anything about this program but a friend uses it and thinks its very user friendly and easy to use.

... and it does save in 3Ds. Thanks rescuefire! It looks nice and simple to use as well. With one of the packages I downloaded it took me three weeks to make a cube, and I haven't got much further since. :)

I tried making things with Blender. It's a mind-bogglingly complicated program. You can save in .3ds format, because I found that once, but I couldn't tell you now how to do it. If Robyn's found a simpler one, I'd go with that!

Thanks Liz. Unfortunately I've found that my skills at model making are non existent. I guess I'll just stick to textures and backgrounds :)

Just had a shuftie through the user manual. Looks way too complicated for me. Have you had a look at AC3D? http://www.inivis.com/ It seems less complicated to me, but then I'm used to it. But having said that I would never have got used to it if it had been too complicated. There's a 14 day free trial if you want to give it a look. There are loads of plugins for it too to make things simpler.

Poopsie, on AC3D have you found a tutorial or anything for that program?

Oh for heavens sake! I found em

Also it seems all of their plug-ins are named the same dang thing. Do you have to create a sub-folder in the Plugins folder for each one?

I'm gettin' nowhere with most of these programs. I just don't think my brain works this way LOL

Edit: Ok I tried to make a soccer ball (football to you Poopsie) and I ended up with something that looks like a black and white lump coming outta the ground ROFL!!! It took me 30 minutes just to figure out how to change colors of sections and not the whole thang!

I'll never be a model maker hehehehe

The plugins all just go in the one folder, no subfolders. There are a couple of files under each name but with different extensions (.p and .tcl). If you have your extensions hidden then they'll look the same to you. It won't let you put two of exactly the same thing in there, it would overwrite it so if you have two of something they must have different extensions.

The ball you made would have ended up in the floor because you didn't lift it above the zero Y plane. The grid that you can see in the 3D window is where the floor is in the game, each square is the same size as a tile in the game, and where they intersect is the middle of the tile in the game. This helps you to place the models exactly where you want them.

It is a slow process learning how to use it. Keep practicing and you'll be amazed what you can do. I've been using it since RTW Deluxe came out, that's years ago, and I'm still by no means an expert at it.

You can send me things to look at if you need help with anything. :D

I'll try it; I very rarely make levels,
but someday it would be nice to do my own models.

I have tried AutoDesk® 3ds Max® and it's way too complicated. :(
I tried LightWave 3D® and it's too complicated.
I tried Bryce® and it's too complicated.
I tried Blender and it's way too complicated.
I tried MilkShape, and it's not what I'm looking for.
I tried Blender and it's way too complicated.
See what I bolded  You said Blender twice

That's quite funny dlcs18,... you got me there with

...Okay, now I fixed it.
I gagged 'cause they were so hard, nearly threw up.

I think VirtLands was right to say it twice:

Blender is way to complicated! It really really is. :?

Bryce Demystified...

Post by VirtLands » Wed Jun 11, 2008 7:39 pm

I've been having trouble for months now with Bryce, particularly,
it would not let me save anything I wish into the 3ds format,
and then just now I discovered why.

ImageImageImageImage
Is this for real ? ? ?
I should right-click on "Bryce 6" and THEN

"RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR ",..... :evil::twisted::evil::twisted:

Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhh!

After months of frustration and trying to figure this one out,
it apparently had nothing to do with Bryce, but rather with
the Vista operating system.

(Don't make this mistake I made, stay with Windows XP.)
Vista is : evil : : twisted : : evil : : twisted : :
