A note on spoilers

A way to get the exact colour of the spoiler tags (so that they absolutely cannot be seen without highighting is to use these:

Example:

Hello, you can't see me without highlighting.

It's also easy to remember: Move your mouse over the Font Colour option and read the tip!

Actually simply choosing white isn't the best idea, popo.

I've just strained my eyes at a spoiler really hard, and Small is right -- you can make it out without highlighting. For people with eagle's eyes, this is bad.

However, this FAFAFA combo gets the colour exact. Bravo, Small.

I said to use white text and put it inside quotes, then it goes on a white background and can't be seen.

Small was just saying exactly what I'd already said, except he was using the hex for the colour, which most people wouldn't have a clue about.

I think (exactly) white is nothing but #ffffff and the background color of a quote is about #fafafa

To me white text on a fafafa background is a little bit visible, but not readable.

Ok, I've been to the other thread and found out what you were on about.

I still think just using white is much simpler than having to find out what the hex is. Just how do you find that out anyway?

I didn't find out myself. I just read what was written before in this thread, I tested and I noticed that one quote is a little bit visible and the other not.

But actually I don't believe there are people to whom the white text is not only a little bit visible but also pretty easy readable. So I always do it the easy way, clicking "white" in the menu.

And I also noticed there is enough said yet about this in the other thread.

I've just tried altering the brightness/contrast on my monitor and I still can't see any difference in the white versus FAFAFA writing. I am getting on in years though, so maybe that means I can't see the fine differences a younger person can.

Maybe we should put it to a vote.

On the topic popo mentioned I also said that the exact hex values of the darker and lighter posts are #DEE3E7 and #EFEFEF

To find out the values:
Let's say you have a color with the RGB values 84,183,255.
1. Open the Windows Calculator.
2. Type in 84 and switch to hex. The value is 54.
3. Switch back to decimal. Type in 183 and switch to hex. The value is B7. Yes, B, as in Border.
4. Switch back to decimal. Type in 255 and switch to hex. The value is FF. Yes, F, as in Forgery.
5. Join the hex values together. #54B7FF is a kind of sky blue.

Yes, it's a bit tedious, but it ALWAYS works. No exceptions.

And to find out the RGB values in the first place you do what, paste the screenshot into your art package then use the colour dropper to see the RGB?

I have to admit I have done this sometimes when I'm making an animation that the background won't go transparent on. I use the RGB of the forum background as the background for the animation.

HEY LOOK HERE You can get much more subtle changes in colour using hex can't you?

popo, here's the final convincer that the color WHITE (aka #FFFFFF) is NOT the exact color of the quote's background, even though it's very, very close.
Take a screenshot of a quote that has any short text. (your silly boy quote is ideal for this)
Put it in Paint, and use the bucket tool somewhere in the middle of the quote, (not to the left or you risk bucketing letters instead) to paint it all black.
You'll be surprised that the text remains white. No surprise, cause Paint considers even very close colors to be different, cause they are!

Now do the same, except in a #FAFAFA quote.
Nothing remains. Not at all.

White is close enough to not to be readable for most people, even I can just barely view it, and certainly not read it) but if someone can view such spoilers too easily (and I believe it can be possibly true) it's no surprise that such a thread appears!

I've got a BBCode Spoiler on my forum where it doesn't display the text (can't even highlight it!) until you press the "show" button then it displays it completely. Then if you want to hide it again just press the hide button. I'm very sure it doesn't display it when its hidden because I can't even highlight the box until it displays!

Yes, I am convinced they are different colours, but like you say most people can't see it and certainly not read it if just done with 'white'. If you wanted to avoid it you still could even if you can see it a little, and as most peope write 'spoiler wrote' then you know there's a spoiler there and not to scrutinise it if you don't want to see it.

The best idea of all would be to have a special lpoiler button like jdl menioned. I've seen them on other forums and they are better than highlighting sometimes long text boxes. Maybe that's something for Patrick to think about when he's done with the next Adventures game. For sure there'll be lots of spoilers flying about then.

I PMed Patrick about it a few days ago... The BBCode is called "hide" and like popo said, when the next game is out, there's going to be a lot of activity on here dealing with spoilers. First of all tyteen, I found this very hard to read. Translating:

If this translation is right, then no. What reason would there be to install these mods? The only mod he has installed is the attachment mod, so he might know how to install mods, but I can't be sure.

At this point in time I won't install any new mods - the forum isn't the stablest as is. If I do a complete re-install in the future, I'll look at a whole number of possible options. But that will be some time away still.

#FFFFFF = Completely white
#FAFAFA = The background of the quote box

I have found another way of doing spoilers that should work on any background (in a quote box or directly in a normal message, even if theme changes cause backgrounds to change later) and is (I think) neater and easier to remember:

Here it is used directly in a message.

Well, it looks to me like Maxthon just wraps the MSIE control, and Flock seems to be based on Firefox. So I guess it is your version of Internet Explorer that would matter for Maxthon, and the version of Firefox used in your version of Flock.
I think it is only in the CSS3 standard that the transparent colour option is available, so it will probably only be supported by very recent browser versions. I'm using Firefox 3.0.1.

So it looks like matching to a known background is still the most practical method for now, although I still think that transparent is conceptually better.
