First of all - yes - you can see this as blatant advertisement for a game. a very special one. one, that is my alltime favourite, that filled hours of my youth, and one that i occasionally enjoy from time to time, often beeing tempted to play it through again and again. so - what i am talking about?

its imho the perfect blend of a puzzle game, combined with exploration of a huge world, some action (bug hunting) and some rpg elements. not to forget - it has a story as well.

its also very interesting from a technical side. it has a persistent game world: you can visit each place and find everything as you have left it. if you build bridges with cutted wood or destroy walls with acid, you will find it exactly as you leaved it. you can place found items in a save spot to make more room in your backpack and can pick those items up later if you need for example more acid bottles. but beware the tamalas, a native tribe in robotIII. they tend to sometimes pick up some items just for fun. but you can then speak to them and get those items back.

well, but here comes the downfall - its german language only. but - you definitely should try it anyway - its really worth it -and there is google translator / dict.cc .

the common sense is that part III, taking place on a huge island with over 80 "rooms" is the best part of the series. here a screenshot of the first scene:

Image

and here - spoiler warning - is a link showing the huge game world map:

http://www.game-of-robot.de/maps/robot3 ... s/k_r3.htm

dont look too long if you want to play this gem!

why do i am posting this game here? first, because i think that some of you will love it, second, because i love drod and even more love the new drod rpg, but STILL feel that drod rpg is not really the game i would like to play. drod rpg is on the right way, but its not exactly what would satisfy me. i will try to explain what i feel missing later.

back to robot - one last word: its more than 10 years old now, but the original author ported it from dos to win32 , so it runs perfectly on any modern windows pc. here is a download link:

here is a fan page with lots of screenshots etc: (german only, sorry):

english translation with google:

some more screenshots from other episodes:

robot II:

robot IV:

note - the game is shareware, but you can play a fair amount of the game - i would say at least one third of each episode. robot junior is free, but only has 15 rooms or so.

please tell me if you like that game series. just wanted to share.

------------------
some items explained:

Image this is the acid bottle. it is helpful to destroy some brick walls.

Image the bank. here you can convert gold and platin into points. points are important to pass some "point barriers".

Image with the dealer you can trade gold and platin into useful items.

Image the door that opens with key 1.

Image the key number two.

Image an electric fence. dont run into it, you will die. but its an good idea to guide monsters into the fence - then they will die.

Image eating the garlic will hold away the monsters for a while.

Image stepping over this item will teleport you throgh the room to a random place. this might teleport you over walls and water.

Image stepping into a skull will surround you with electric fences. often a deadly situation, it can be handy if monsters are near.

Image drinking this bottle will refresh your life points.

Image
some more items, from left to right and top to bottom:
1. heart - makes a clone of you
2. blue suit - protects for electric shock ( the fences)
3. ammunition - stones for your sling shot
4. some old script - contains hints about game and secret rooms. google translator is your friend here
5. christmas tree - opens doors that are closed because of living monsters
6. the slingshot - kill monsters with stones
7. a monster hole - stepping over it will awake a monster
8. a spell book

sadly, yes.

the whole "game of robot" series is in german only.
nethertheless, i would suggest you to give it a try. you can play quite a while and explore the world /island without really needing to understand everything. also, i suggest you to watch the youtube video to get some ideas about gameplay and how to solve some puzzles.

but arent here some german people ? to those i highly suggest this game.

p.s. to make it clear - this game is not my game, i didnt program it. its just my favorite game from the old times.

no comments on the game?

i highly suggest you to try it. it is the same as with wonderland:

it does not have high-end-graphics, but it has high-end gameplay. you just have to play the game a while to get really deeply hooked by the complexity and depth.

thanks! and sorry that did not introduced myself before posting !

a bit about me:

i am an long time puzzle game fan. i started gaming on an old IBM XT computer with a black-white hercules graphics card. but that hercules graphics card had a stunningly high resolution for that time ! my first puzzle game was blockout, a 3d tetris. i played it endless hours. (stop - i remember that i had a cplus4 before the ibm pc, but i had only 3 games for that c64 brother: xentipede, moon buggy and a simple chess program. i didnt play much on that thing, because loading from tapes took endlessly long. though centipede was cool!) after blockout i played a bit prince of persia, then came sokoban in god old cga graphics! i absolutely loved sokoban! after that i discovered game of robot II and was immediately hooked. years later i discovered DROD and even later , to be clear 2008 - i came across wonderland. i like wonderland much more than drod.

Prince Of Persia 2D { Online Game }

Post by VirtLands » Thu Feb 05, 2009 6:20 am

Hi again Herc,

Amazingly, as you did, I remember having an old KayPro PC 8088
(+8087) chip computer with a Hercules Graphics Card built into it. The
display was monochrome green, and it only ran DOS 6.22 This was I
think over 20 years ago, and I'm amazed that I can still remember all
those details.
I think that it only ran at a speed of 133 Mhz, its memory was only
640 Kbytes + a little Extended Memory). It had two floppy drives built
into it, one was a 5.25" floppy drive, and the other was a 3.5" floppy
drive.

Like you, I played Prince Of Persia (2D) with it. Prince of Persia was
one of my favorite games back then.. I kept experimenting with
this program called GWBasic. I know, ...it's so
ancient.

You can still play Prince Of Persia 2D on today's Windows.
There is an online version and there is an offline version.
The offline versions might require DOSBox to work, so, you might need
to download DOSBox.

Okay, now back to 2009 . . .
I'll try the Game Of Robot sometime, (even though it's in German), :)

I've been so busy with stuff lately, but, it's good to make 'computer'
time.
