Hi Liz,

You qualify with age, that was the only rule btw.

Isn't this the best place to be when the teenagers are giving you a hard time?

I never had children so I'm not even a granny! I am fortunate enough to have nephews and nieces who turn to me when they are in trouble.
It's still nice to be part of their lives, I always felt that I played a part in their upbringing.

This is going to be a real fun place, if you ever read the posts in Wonderland Women's Institute, you will know what I mean.

I will leave it up to you. :D

Thanks Maureen :D
Yes, it'll be a brilliant escape from the teenagers. I never got around to reading the WWI pages, but if this thread is anything to go by it'll be completely nuts.

Well, as an English English speaker I can't say I'm a great enthusiast about English spelling. :x I think it's ridiculous, but because of my training I tend to spell correctly (all that convent education!). Found this poem about spelling and pronunciation, you might like:

When in English class we speak
Why is break not rhymed with freak?
Will you tell me why it's true
That we say sew, but also few?

When a poet writes a verse
Why is horse not rhymed with worse?
Beard sounds not the same as heard
Lord sounds not the same as word

Cow is cow, but low is low
Shoe is never rhymed with toe.
Think of nose and dose and lose
Think of goose, but then of choose.

Confuse not comb with tomb or bomb,
Doll with roll, or home with some.
We have blood and food and good.
Mould is not pronounced like could.

There's pay and say, but paid and said.
"I will read", but "I have read".
Why say done, but gone and lone -
Is there any reason known?

To summarise, it seems to me
Sounds and letters disagree.

Hi Liz,

I love the "pome" :) :)

Having been the US side of the pond for 40 years now, I have great difficulty with some of my spelling - and pronunciation too....and what's even worse is when people ask me how I said (or spelt/spelled) it before I came over here, I can no longer remember, and usually have to ask my husband, who is a much travelled TEXAN

Age is no problem, so does my level of senility qualify me for the M.A.W.s club :?: :?: I'm also a card carrying member of AARP, and I'm getting even closer to the dreaded Medicare birthday.

I have an American "green" card which is really pink and white but no-one seems to be able to explain why, so maybe as we are all inhabitants of Rainbow land I might at last get an answer ..... and for the UKers out there, yes I still am as I also travel on my British passport.

Hi Ann
I will officially submit my application to the M.A.W. thread.
Over 40? You're in, no application needed.
Welcome.
Any one, any age, can read the ridiculous discussions here, they just can't take exception and post it.

So far this is my favorite: Majic wrote:

Sounds like me.

Hi Ann!

You said "I'm getting even closer to the dreaded Medicare birthday. "

Don't feel bad, I received my Medicare card about a month ago and today it becomes officially active. I don't feel that old, maybe that's because of Wonderland! A great place to stay young! :D

Looks like they get their bus passes at the age of 55 :!:

THANK YOU for releasing me MAD !! :D I'm FREE !!!

Yeh, I'm not retired, still working for several more years yet, but I do
belong to AARP which doesn't mean you have to be retired.

Makes a lot of sense, eh? You actually only need to be 50 to join AARP.

AARP is really no big deal, actually. Not government sanctioned or anything like that. It's just an organization, it might even be for profit (does anyone here know?), they just offer discounts for members, travel, hotels, prescription and non-prescription drugs, insurance plans, etc. Their only requirement is that members are at least 50 years old and pay their dues.

Some people even think of AARP as kind of a rip-off. A glorified insurance broker and lobbyist of sorts. They lobby politicians (congress, etc.) on behalf of retired people, and they at least try to serve the interests of retired/older folks.

I hope I've represented them correctly. Feel free to correct me anywhere I'm wrong folks.

What a laugh Cat.  Thanks for those lyrics.

Maureen - what a coincidence! I just sang that silly song to my dogs and they joined in very tunefully  .

A good laugh keeps you young. Being mad in Wonderland keeps you young. We'll all be 18 again before we know it (as long as it's not 18 months :( ).
