I have also a question to you BB: Sometimes if you quote someone else who wrote a sentence with a smiley / emoticon, you quote only the sentence, but not the smiley. What's the point of that? Do you perhaps believe that a sentence without smiley means exactly the same as the same sentence with smiley?

If you must know, (and I'm not joking (no really, I'm not),) it's because the smiley would be lonely inside the quote.

Even if it was a joke I wouldn't understand, but since you said twice that it was not, I don't understand your answer either. The smiley was together with the sentence, so it was not lonely if you quoted it together with that sentence. Or do you mean something else with the word "lonely"?

If it will help us to understand you better, help you to understand us better, or in general, help people on this forum to understand each other better, then I'm convinced that it does matter. But I agree, if it's only about that one situation I was talking about, it doesn't perhaps matter much. However, since seemingly more people think the same way about it, perhaps it does matter though.

I don't understand what you mean with a sentence is (or is not) alive. How can that be, and when is a sentence alive, and when it's not alive?

A smile looks alive, a sentence doesn't. And, the reason is much, much more complex.
