What do the codes mean?

I wrote:I guess you are using sort of smiley-codes which not appear as smileys, such as :3 or :S. I also see sometimes people using XP or XD, and maybe more of them. Is there anywhere a link to those codes, so can you give a link that I can look what all those codes mean?
Actually I meant a list with those codes where I said "link" the first time.

Instead of moving the post to a new topic, the topic was locked, so apparently I'd better had made a new topic the first time. But well, I can't look into the future.

In the meantime, I still don't know what those codes mean. Can anyone tell me please?

Oh well, there's also a poll. You can vote if you wish, but if not, simply ignore it. (but don't delete it please  )

You can actually view these codes by turning your monitor (or your head) by 90 degrees. That way you will understand.

Some smiley here are based on those word smileys. E.G: :D will get parsed into .

Thanks. I see something with the letter "D" represents an open mouth laughing or anyhow at a positive way, the same as the very happy smiley. And I guess "P" stands for putting a tongue out in a joking way, right? And what's the "X" before the D or P. Is XD or XP the same as :D and :P? Or do they have different meanings?

Also a ";" instead of the ":" means a wink if I'm right, because that's also how the smileys are. Probably :S is the same as the confused smiley because the mouth has the shape of a "~" which looks like an "S" on its side.

But then I don't know what the :3 means, a double tongue perhaps? I don't see a smiley that looks like a 3 on its side. If it would be BD, I would say the D is the mouth and the B are sunglasses.

BTW, if people would like to explain their opinion about polls, feel also free to do that here; I don't expect a long discussion about smiley codes either. :)

Thanks. I had to Google for FTW, and I assume that it's the opposite of WTF, so actually :3 means the same as the "cool sunglasses" smiley. 8)

Also the X as the eyes in your picture makes it clear.

:3 is a kitty face. It is not a sunglasses face.
:S is a twisted mouth face.
:V is an open mouth face.
etc.

I don't always use the image smilies because they look really cheesy to me. :P

What kind of emotion shows the :3 cat / kitty face? You know I use the :D for good, fine etc., the  "laughing out loud" and the 8) for fun, cool, somewhere between the other two, just fun. Is the cat face then about the same as the normal smiley? :) Or is there no existing smiley for?

And the :V open mouth; is that such as :o surprised? Because the :D has also an open mouth.

No. There are no smileys for the text codes. They do not exist. I like the emotions :V :S and :3 etc. better than the actual smilies, so I use them. When I say :3 etc., I don't mean for there to be actual images. :P

Well it seems not many people have an opinion about polls, since only 7 people voted. Three people agree with me that more then one option is true. I think option 2 and 4.

For some (2) reasons I think that Tyteen voted 3. It was the first vote about the same time that Tyteen responded on my question about the codes. Second reason is that he wanted to have a poll about who should be moderator.

I think option 3 would be not good:

If someone has an opinion about something, and he/she tries to explain it, and why he/she has that opinion, then it's very good possible that someone else says other things where the first person hadn't thought about, so after that, person 1 perhaps changes his/her opinion. By simply voting without any explanation it's not possible that people learn from other people's opinions or knowledge. Therefore I think it's good if people think about why they have that opinion, so they can talk about it. The only way to get an agreement is if people explain their opinion, accept and respect other people's opinion and try to learn from each other.

A poll may be good to state your personal taste about something, such as: I like TOW, or RTW, or perhaps the WA editor. But not if it's about important things.

Let's say there are 5 fools in a house. Peter, Patrick, Pierre and Pipo-the-clown all like to eat potatoes with strawberry sauce. But John prefers pancakes with ketchup. Now let's say you are John. Would it be fair if they vote everyday what they eat? Then you have to eat everyday potatoes with strawberry sauce and never pancakes with ketchup. That's not fair, is it? If more people have the same taste about something, does that give them more rights to get what they want then the one who has a different taste? I think John has the same rights as the other people.

So, talking about option 3, I also said something about option 2 and 4. A poll doesn't ask for reasons and explanations, so it is not to be used for something important, but it is very good to be used for something just for fun, no matter if it's an opinion, a taste, something they experienced, or something they know.

The latter brings me to option 1. I have to admit that I didn't think out that option by myself, but I sort of stole it from Blast. (I hope you don't have a problem with that  ) http://pcpuzzle.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21625 If someone wants to know, just for fun, how many people know the answer to a question, and how many people don't know, then I think a poll is a good option to check that. Nothing wrong with that. If you don't agree please tell me.
Oh, and btw, the poll was completely unnecessary here.
That's also a personal opinion. In my opinion a poll is always unnecessary, but not always useless. (option 5) If it's just for fun it's not useless, but it's also hard to say that it's necessary. But if a MOD deletes a poll because he thinks it's unnecessary, that's also quite unnecessary in my opinion. Because the topic is still there and can be brought up to top by people who respond on it, which may be annoying for some people, but the poll can't. (if you vote on a poll, it isn't coming up back to top)

But the most unnecessary thing that a MOD can do is to change a poll or delete an option, because he thinks it's a wrong option. But well, I've said that before, and as long as there no response at, I guess that's clear.

Then option 6: I'm glad that no one disagreed that I made a topic about 2 different things instead of 2 different topics.

The vote on option 8 is probably by ^_^, because he wants to be different, and that's ok. 8) That's all I want to say about it right now.

If my guesses are right about who voted what, I'm still curious about the people who agreed with me about option 7, and what other options they would vote.

I think a poll can be something serious and I also think a poll can be something to know other users more.

Do you mean: Only by voting in a poll itself, or voting and then talking about it in the topic?

Voting then at least posting what your vote was (so people know who voted what).

It also can be interesting seeing what most people voted (and what the least people voted, and between those two).

But you can get serious polls too. Like this.

I agree.

But the example where you put a link to, is not a poll, but just a topic where people made their choice by posting. And I think if it's about something serious, then that way is better then only a poll, for the reasons I mentioned before.

That could have been a poll, though. And if it were, then it would have been a serious poll.

Yes, it could have been a poll. But if it was a poll, then there probably would have posted less people in the topic, and now it was not a poll, they had no other way to give their opinion but posting.

All that I want to say is that if people can vote in a poll, some of them are not going to tell what they voted, and definitely not why they voted. So they are anonymous voters.
