Could you be scammed???

Post by Bearsland » Tue Apr 12, 2005 11:56 am

With all the stories in the news at the moment about people being conned online and having their identities stolen, I found this story interesting.

http://www.vnunet.com/news/1162392

Everyone here should read this, especially if you shop or bank online. Not only should everyone read the article; you should all take the test. There's one for Brits and one for US citizens. I assume our European friends could take either. Since it's a test to see if you can spot the scammer, it doesn't really matter which you take.

This is a very serious matter guys, try one of the tests.

UK test: http://survey.mailfrontier.com/survey/phishing_uk.html

US test: http://survey.mailfrontier.com/survey/quiztest.html

Bear 8)

For the record, I scored 9/10. Not perfect, but I did spot all the scam e-mails, which is the main point, so I'm quite happy.

Good test OB, I scored 8/10 btw. One I said was fraudulent and it wasn't, that doesn't bother me in the least. The one I thought was genuine rattled my cage more.

I would have been a lot happier scoring 10/10, must be more careful in future.

Yes, a very good test Bear. I got 6 out of 10, but I erred on the side of caution. I didn't get any of the phishing ones incorrect and suspected some of the legitimate ones. I'm happy with that. I always suspect anything that asks me to link to a site and provide information. I always go directly to the site. I also report anything I find suspicious. I've gotten several fraudulent emails and I'm happy to say I've helped the authorities catch some of the perps. Thanks for the test. :)

I got 9/10, yippee. :P 8)

The one I got wrong, I thought was a scam and it was actually genuine.

I would always err on the side of caution anyway. I once got an email from ebay telling me if I didn't update my account it would be deleted. It was a bit of a giveaway really, I have never been on ebay and don't have an account.

Thanks Bear.

That was a great eye opener. Really made me stop and read all the fine print ,
and I'm so glad to report that I scored 9/10,
and the one I missed I erred on the side of caution, thank goodness.

Now I'm going to see how well my husband does - but I'm the bill payer so I was glad to have my skills tested.

Again - many thanks.

You are indeed a wise, but-not-so-very Old Bear.

Hi Cat, don't feel bad. I don't think anyone meant to kick you while you are down. I wish we could link to photos or gifs we have on our harddrives. I have several photos that you could use and would be glad to send them to you. The only thing is, I think the only way you could use them is as an attachment, not as part of your profile.

Just to cheer you up, here are a couple of links to some really cute kitties!

Ann, you are very welcome. :)

Yes, they are a real eye opener, aren't they. I get Paypal scam e-mails all the time and some of them look real, but I fortunately am in the right business to be able to spot them. You did the right thing by erring on the cautious side; that's simply the best way to do it. Great score!! :)

Bear 8)

btw. Thanks for the compliment.

btw2. Cat, don't cry. I love your pussy cat pics, keep posting them; the last one was just too big, that was all. I'm sorry if I upset you.

It would have been nice if someone wrote me a Pm instead of making this public. I was going to change it today anyway, I only keep the same pic on here for a couple of weeks and then I change them out.

I am ok now, just ticked me off that it wasn't handled better. I will keep putting cat here but smaller ones. :D

Some are so adorable and I couldn't resist. Thanks O\B

Thanks Bear,
Freightrain is doing well. Staying busy and  learning to drive! He asked me yesterday if I had seen you. He wants to do another competition if he can find the time. He just interviewed for his first real job. Hope he gets it.
I'm glad to see so many of the old crowd in here as well as so many new members. :D
Cat, I didn't get your cat pics, I'm using Netscape right now, they'll probably show up in Explorer. Anyway, I'm sure they are cute. I'm also sure criticism wasn't meant. I look forward to seeing them. :D If I could figure out a way to get my cats to pose for me, I'd take pics and send them to you. They're just too independent to let me.

HI SharonM

Did I miss something here, concerning the cat pics? :?: do you want me to send you some pictures of cats? I don't have a cat but can get some off the internet where I get mine from. Thanks for offering to take pics of your cat and send to me some cats are independent.

I do have several pics of the cat I did have, she was killed by a dog several years ago. I do have a outdoor dog, that is very protective of me.

Sorry to hear about your cat, Cat. No, I was saying that for some reason your signature cat is not showing up on my computer. I enjoy seeing them though and have seen others you have used, so I don't know why I'm not picking up the latest ones. Maybe because I just switched to XP and I'm still learning the ins and outs of it. Thanks for your offer, though. If ever I can get a good picture of my three, I'll PM you so that I send them to you if you want. Don't count on it though, they seem to be psychic and disappear whenever anyone picks up a camera.

But now we should be returning to Bear's original thread. Anyone else out there taken the test? :?: :?:
