WA3 Crowd Sourcing: Game Icon [Closed and Winner Selected]

Post by Midnight Synergy »

Another crowd sourcing for WA3. As suggested in another thread, the game needs a good icon. An lord knows, I'm not very good with those (they've been very basic so far).

In fact, I will start this off by asking for some suggestions for a good (free, so folks don't have to pay for this) icon maker. Ideally the icon should be scalable (or come in different versions for different sizes).

Also, post suggested icons in a large size, e.g. 256x256 pixels. Keep in mind that icons should be clean and should look good scaled down to smaller sizes (if it's a just a blobby mess at 32x32, then you have too much visual info in your icon).

The selected icon gets its creator in the credit, and a free copy of the game as well.

Again, thank you in advance... I hope you guys don't think I'm taking advantage of you... I have to admit I'm just having way too much fun seeing what you come up with and can add to WA3, given that the game was a 100% solo project up to this point. Plus, it does shave a bit of time off the development.

Same here, it's free. :D

If anyone wants to use Paint.NET with this, simply download the program here:
http://www.getpaint.net/

and then download this DLL:
http://www.evanolds.com/dl/IcoCur.dll

Stick the DLL in the FileTypes folder that's in Paint.NET's root directory.

Size your canvas to 256x256 and draw away, then save-as an .ico. When saving, select the sizes you want built in the icon for automatic resizing by Windows... Hopefully this makes sense. :D

My icon. In the 32x32 I scaled fine-tuned it to make it look like a proper 32x32 icon

I've managed to come up with 4 pixeled Icons.
All icons I submit are in .ico format and are ready to be put in the game.

Is there a deadline for this Patrick?

Aha, I see the nice icons jdl created.

Image

I was wondering if desktop icons can be animated, but upon some research,
I discovered that it takes special software to force Windows to animate them.

Oh well, that could have been a swell idea. Image

Yeah, the .ico format does not support animated images. Only .gif supports it.
If you bothered to copy and paste this signature, or zoom in, to make it possible to read, then I wasted 5-10 seconds of your life.

My (probably not the last) entry - the spaceship icon. Proper .ico files for both XP and Vista/W7 are in the .zip archive, the screenshot is only for preview.

Some nice entries so far. One note - try to keep it to a single image (e.g. a single space ship or z-bot or star etc)... for example the one that jdl sent with lots of little things looks nice in the larger format, but watch it in a "details" view and it's just some blurry pixels. :) (not picking on jdl specifically, of course, just using his last icon as a good example).

Clean lines, good contrast, that seems to work best.

So far, graphical wise, the spaceship looks the best. I like the spaceship one, but in my opinion, I think something to do with Planets or Z-Bot's would look better for Planet of the Z-Bots.

The second project by me, based on my Gas Giant planet render. Again, screenshot for preview pruposes and .ico files in the .zip archive.

D-P, but I made another icon (Z-Bot this time!) during my dizzy car journey on a typical hole-over-a-hole Polish road. It felt like playing Twister onboard of a Viking ship.

Anyway, enjoy the icon!

The planet one looks really good, that's the best so far that fits into the game in my opinion.

However, the larger scale icon of the planet looks a little bit blurry.
Why do you have separate icons for Windows XP and Vista/7 anyway?

By the way, if any of you guys have Photoshop, you can get this plug-in that allows you to open and save files as .ico format...

The .ico format was revised and upgraded in Windows Vista. New .ico standard allows large scale icons (256x256 px), while in XP max icon size is 48x48 px. There are also few more minor tweaks, so I decided to upload both .ico files to avoid compatibility troubles.

Okay, yeah, I thought it might have something to do with that.

About the blur in planet icon: this can be easily fixed.
EDIT: fixed, see my post below.

I finished mine! :D It looks better smaller. (And I downloaded the Z-Bot image online from a RTW picture.)

Hope ya like it! And again, sorry about the size. Will this be a problem?

My second icon: Wysp in space. And after this, I'm going to (attempt to) make .zip files for both my icons. On another note, what's the deadline?

EDIT: I investigated a little, and now I don't think I'll need the .zip files. But is a .png enough?

I've remade Gas Giant icon: relighted and some blur fixed, however it won't be better due to the renderer engine.

Also about the .ico format: XP perfectly supports Vista/W7 icons, it only cannot use the high resolution icon and uses 48x48 instead of 256x256, but it works perfectly.
