An interestng wee article here on the BBC news site. Given the results of Patrick's poll, this group includes a lot of people here.

Personally, I think it's a good thing. I know that the 'Net' has certainly changed my mother in law's life immensely.

I know gaming and communicating on the forum keeps my brain active. If I sit in front of the telly I go to sleep.

Yes, he's got it wrong - it's actually 1,233,610

Only 35% of people over-55s are using the net, according to the Office of National Statistics.

I'm not sure where they are getting their statistics from, but around here, it's closer to 65% - also, my dad is 84 and uses the net a lot - not for games or meeting people, but for his business (and HE lives the next state over). Maybe this study isn't current???

Oh, it's current alright, but it refers to the UK only, I believe.

That said, like you, Majic, I still don't believe the figures. I reckon it's a lot higher than that. I should add that since the figures quoted are from the Office of National Statistics, (i.e. The Government), I'd be taking them with a very large pinch of salt anyway.

Apparently, it's supposed to be a term of endearment. It alledgely sounds better than 'Old People on the Net'.

My experience would suggest 'Blue-rinse Surfers' would be a bit more accurate.

Very interesting article, Bear. I agree the numbers probably aren't accurate.
I would like to see similar programs here. There are very few in my section of the world that have computers, much less internet access. Most of those who don't have them, when asked either say they can't afford one or are afraid of them. My mother-in-law is of the opinion that they tend to divide people even more from lack of personal contact. Needless to say, I don't agree with her and I can't change her mind. I think she and others like her would be more likely to accept it from another source.

I have a 90 year old friend who got her computer at age 85. She learned how to email; forwarding is her most favorite thing

Sometimes it took 18 clicks to see what was there, and I could see the email addresses of a thousand people..

I don't open them any more.
She can still remember how to use AOL Instant Messenger...most of the time, but she types very well.

If you travel roughly eastward, you will probably run out of gas in my
neighborhood. Feel free to stop by and pick up my vehicle, as it is also
of the silver variety. That way, you could drop off the out-of-gas silver
vehicle and continue onward without missing a beat.

Majic, are you really driving all the way from Arizona to Illinois? What an epic journey. And then going on to New York State to pick up another silver car. And then back to Arizona!

To an English person your distances are unbelievably huge. We have villages signposted that are only one or two miles apart, and going to Cornwall on holiday (about 300 miles) seems a ghastly trek.

If you come to England you can borrow my silver car!
