The best 3D program I can recommend is Blender. It's free (I'm somewhat sure it is open-source as well), works great, and has a lot of features.

The only other 3D program I know is Google SketchUp, but that's really only useful for creating buildings and all that stuff.

Blender is an excellent choice, yes. There's also Maya 3D, but it's quite costly for commercial use; you can get a student license though.

From what I know about it, Blender is the most full-featured free program available. Some people complain that it has strange UI, but I think that's mostly in comparison to expensive professional programs. If you're learning 3D modelling, it probably doesn't matter which UI you start with, because learning the ideas of 3D modelling is very difficult regardless of UI.

It's most likely your computer that doesn't work.

A quick google search gave me this:
http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/25-free-3d ... -not-miss/

Some of these are not exactly what you probably want and some appear to be Linux-only, but there should be something that works.

There's also Now3D but it only uses its own format, so you'll need a converter, which is listed in the Now3D FAQ. Site is here: http://www.now3d.it/Eng/faq.aspx

There are more, but try to find something that works on your computer/video card out of these programs. There should be something that works.

I have no idea whether these are any good, because I know next to nothing about 3D modelling. Which is a shame, as I'd love to learn camera mapping.
