READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE PLAYING!
(the first paragraph is just background information, you can skip it if you want)
You may have heard of an arcade rhythm game called "Dance Dance Revolution". In DDR, you stand on a metal pad with four arrows on it. In front of you, arrows scroll up the screen towards targets. You have to stand on the arrow on the floor at the same time as the arrows line up with the targets on screen. At the same time as all of that, music plays. All of the timings of the arrows are in time with the music, and they tend to either follow the rhythm or the vocal line. You can see how this works by typing "dance dance revolution" into your favouite search engine or video sharing website. Or, you can download a game similar to DDR to your PC and try it yourself. My favourite is StepMania, although some people prefer ITG or osu!mania. All of those programs are free, and StepMania is open-source, so even Amnon can download it without fear. Be warned: it's much harder than it looks, even though you're using a keyboard instead of your feet to play the game.
I've tried my best to recreate this game in RTW. However, some of the differences are:
- you press the arrows on your keyboard to make Peegue stand on the arrows in the game
- you fail as soon as you miss just one note; in DDR you have a life bar which increases by hitting notes well and drains by missing notes
- the notes are actually boulders
- you have a very large window in which to step, I would guess almost one second; the real game's timing is much more strict
What I have managed to produce from DDR includes:
- stepping in time to music
- 4 keys
- telling if a note was hit
- a decent stepchart (I hope)
- lots of other stuff
To make the sound balance optimal you must set the music volume to "High" and the sound volume to "Low". Set your computer's main volume control loud enough to hear the music clearly.
To resync the boulders/notes with the background music if you fail the level, you must hit ESC and go back to the "Custom Levels" menu, then ESC once more. Then the music will stop. Then choose "Custom Levels" from the current level and choose PPR from the menu. You'll find that the music track restarts and it will be in sync again.
The music will desync from the notes if:
- you pause the game
- you restart the level
- you fail and die
- you exit just to the level select screen
You can still play the level while the music is desynced if you really want to, it's just much more difficult and less fun.
If you hit all the notes correctly, then Peegue will be able to walk to the right, go through the teleporter and finish the level!
If you don't hit a note, then it hits you instead. Don't let this happen.
If this is too easy, try creating your own stepcharts, or extend mine. I really started running out of motivation towards the end, which is why it ends abruptly. And is also a month late.
I think that's all, please leave a reply if you run into any problems. You can go ahead and download the level now. Be sure to put it in its own folder inside CustomLevels - you'll see why soon enough.
Oh, the video solution? What, you really need one? What's that? With me on my dance mat too? *sigh* Oh, very well then. Wait a few days.
