Sorry for the scare
Hi folks,
sorry that the site was down a couple of days - as always, it just happened when I was also off email for a bit, so I didn't see message until just now. I think we're back in business though.
Best,
Patrick

Have events like this happened before?
Re: Sorry for the scare
It can happen. Running a website is no easy task
Echoing previous posts, thank you Patrick for keeping this place up and running for so long! I do still pop back in here in between periods of inactivity and it's great to see both new & familiar faces

I love you.
Re: Sorry for the scare
Thanks you very much Patrick for keeping this community alive and thriving!
Also one more note for community members: the forums now support uploading WonderlandPlus.NET .lvlx files without hassles so you don't need to zip them up now, again many many thanks to Patrick for this.

Thank you Patrick!
I'm not sure if phpBB has an option for it, but you may want to consider doing site backups every now and then just in case something more difficult crosses our path.

Re: Soz for the scare
Echoing what's been restated here, but as always, thank you MS for keeping this place afloat. It's a nice niche.
If a solar flare were to take out *just* the forum's servers, that may as well be divine intervention.TwingleTheScraggler wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2024 11:35 pmLike, the server gets knocked out by a solar flare!

Re: Sorry for the scare
You're right. A solar flare would take out servers around the world.

Re: Sorry for the scare

Re: Sorry for the scare
Thanks all for the messages! I'm glad to see the forum and game continue into their now third decade! I know I'm not active on the forum myself (and hence miss some things, like a major crash haha), but I plan to keep this running... until of course that giant solar flare that Twingle mentioned
Re: Sorry for the scare
Do you ever plan on backing up the site so it doesn't get lost?Midnight Synergy wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 7:36 pmThanks all for the messages! Re: Sorry for the scare
While I'm not as active as I was long ago, I drop by every so often. I was more-so worried that my account may be hacked to go with it.
It seems like not only this site, but other forums have been affected. Basically any forum site under the same engine. I once tried visiting another forum and was turned away by a similar error. But even that one was back up, which coincides with the state of this one.

Re: Sorry for the scare
Yes, I do backup the site once in a while with the phpbb backup option. In fact, I'll run one now.
Re: Sorry for the scare
Would you be open to a wonderland adventures made with unity for other platforms like stinky and loof in wonderland?Midnight Synergy wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 3:23 pmYes, I do backup the site once in a while with the phpbb backup option. In fact, I'll run one now.

Re: Sorry for the scare
I think I may have found the reason why the forum keeps going down:
https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=2652265
https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=2652748
It seems that this "Claudebot" is some kind of bot that's aggressively scraping forums and other websites. Having so many requests at a time is probably what keeps crashing the forum MySQL tables. At the time of me posting this there aren't too many guests visiting the forum (which might mean that Patrick has already blocked the bot), but I know a couple of weeks ago the guest count was very high. The threads I linked to were made around the same time this issue started too.
Edit: A few minutes after posting this it went from around 40 guests to 100..

What does "scraping" mean? It doesn't sound like a good thing.jdl wrote: ↑Tue May 28, 2024 12:08 amI think I may have found the reason why the forum keeps going down:

Re: Sorry for the scare
I was referring to website scraping/crawling. Basically harvesting data from websites for purposes such as search engine indexing, website archiving, ai training, and so on. You can read more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_scrapingTwingleTheScraggler wrote: ↑Tue May 28, 2024 7:04 pmWhat does "scraping" mean? Always happy to chat about taking over forum's tech operations - I don't exactly have the most time in the world but WonderWiki is still going strong.Midnight Synergy wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 7:36 pmThanks all for the messages!
