Hi Patrick,

I you choose to go with the avatars, I don't understand why you insist on removing the option to upload them from our private machines. Once uploaded they will be somewhere on your server anyway. The down side of having all the avatars in a gallery on the forum is that more than one person could use the same avatar. Lets say I made myself an avatar that I was happy about and got you to put it in the gallery. Then it would sort of become public property and everyone could use it, possibly without realizing that it was originally mine. The gallery is a good idea (and so is the contest) so everybody could have something to choose from. But I would also like the option to upload the avatars from private machines. This would also mean that we could change the avatars whenever we wanted to instead of (no offense Patrick  ) having to wait for you to put them in the gallery.

Or you could abandon the gallery and then everybody could visit Shorty's web site (or other sites), find a picture or animation there, download it to their computer and upload it to the forum. If Shorty's OK with this everybody would still have tons of animations to choose from.

I don't know if it's me that's confused or everyone else, but my experience of using an avatar is much easier than you are all expecting.

You would have control over when you change your picture, you upload it just like you do with levels now. You wouldn't have to wait for Patrick to do anything. See the pic of my avatar control panel above. That gives you complete control over where you get your pic from. Your own computer, a link to another website or a link to this website. I presume Patrick would have control over which of these options to allow.

As far as other people being able to use your sig if you had it in a gallery, they can do that now by right clicking your sig, clicking properties, and then copying the URL to their own sig. There's no way to stop that, you would just have to trust that people wouldn't use someone else's sig without their permission.

I don't know how I missed this post but I did.
Shorty wrote:Popo,

My mother is totally right.. Since day 1 that ohbehave and I joined the wonderland forum we have been picked on and disliked from the very begining when we have done nothing wrong AT ALL... I'm not quite sure "some" of you don't like us ,To be honest... I don't care anymore!! my mother and I love wonderland and look forward to playing all the wonderful levels and also joining in discussions and talking to the wonderful friends we have made on here...
Kym,

I didn't say that I thought your mother thought everything was about her. I was trying to say that this thread was not a personal dig at the both of you.

I consider myself your friend, I love your animated sigs, I even left a message in your guest book, have you read it? I even used one of your sigs - the bouncing boobs one - until I was asked to remove it. So it's not just you who are getting complaints. I even removed my name because it said boobs upside down, and although I thought it was funny, I thought some folks might not.

Like I said before, your sigs will still be in demand if we go down the avatar route, they might just have to be resized. I have started making some animated sigs too, so this will affect me aswell as most of mine are way too big for the size constraints.

As far as not talking to you is concerned, there are a lot of people on here I don't talk to, that doesn't mean I don't like them. One reason I don't talk to you is that I don't play levels anymore so I have no reason to comment. If you had anything to talk to me about I would be happy to have a chat. Or are you talking about PMing? If you are, I only PM when necessary, not as a way of chatting to people.

I do like you both, even if you think I don't.

I know....but if the pictures are in a gallery someone can use someone else's picture without knowing it's someone else's (I hope this makes sence   ).

Yep, I get your drift.

Perhaps in this case there could be some identification with the picture to show ownership, and whether it's available for anyone to use. :D

Look at my cool siggy now - Pam made it for me - I LOVE IT!!!!! Poor Pamster andd Fruitybun have probably found me a right old fussy wotsit - they have spent ages trying to keep me happy by making me siggies! But I really like this one and am gonna stick with it. It should be OK for an avatar-de-blah-di-dah too I hope? (If anyone could measure it for me please????)

Fruitybun - you know we all adore you and mom and your input to this forum is unquestionable. Especially for the FAB siggies that you have been working so hard on. Kazbag was over the moon that you could make her one with her baby on it and so was I when you put my boys on mine too. Poops wasn't being horrid to you and I am sure Patrick wasn't aiming it at you either. I posted a siggy showing my bum and he asked me to remove it too - just like he did Poops' boobies. Sorry for being too saucy   (We are the saucy girls....).

I guess Patrick must have a hard time trying to please everyone - so please don't be offended - this will sort itself out soon. We have to have everyone's input on this to make it fair. Why haven't the people who are on dial-up said anything on this thread - if you are having trouble please let us know how it is effecting you or we cannot possibly resolve this

Popo said some of this already, but let me reiterate:

1) I'm not banning anything. I'm only looking for suggestions and opinions. I know that you guys love the animated sigs, which is why the avatar route would allow you to keep them - all that would change is that they would be under your name, rather than under the post. And if I go with a 120x80x80kb and a pinch of salt, then all but the largest of sigs would fit no problem.

2) I'm not liking or disliking anyone any more or less. That's right, I'm actually a cold emotionless robot - you are all just puny humans in my electronic eyes! ;) No really, nobody should take anything I say personally, or that I have favourites on the board, etc, etc. I don't read a lot of the personal posts on this board, so I don't really know who you are (as a person). If you think I don't like you - that's simply not the case. Now, if I WERE to get to know you, maybe THEN I wouldn't like you anymore. :D (I'm kidding! I'm kidding!)

3) I forgot what I was going to say here, so let me just repeat (1). Nothing's being decided right now, nothing's being taken away, and I'll let this discussion run for at least the week to ensure that most regulars can think about this and say their opinions.

Shorty-Poo and Pammy .. we loves yous and your sigs.

I've already confessed I don't know about the technical stuff but does some of the above mean we can put your brilliant designs into "avatars" instead of "sigs" ... same difference ? :? I'm confluzed

I do know this, I followed some simple instructions and my little boy appeared .. twas like magic  , and you ladies bring magic to the forum be it sigs, animations, levels, chat ... etc ...

So ... Keep smilin' girlies :D :D

Luv Kazza :) :)

Here's one I picked from Kym and Pam's site, just an icky bicky thing cos it's only 44x68 pixels and 1034 bytes. (Just over 1kb)

Still plenty of room for scope you guys eh? 8) :D

This proves what I've always said... "Good things come in small packages".

Hi all,
It doesn't seem to me that anyone wants to eliminate the signiture animations. (Changing them to avatars would only move them out of the body of the post.)
The point is they they should be smaller.

Here is the problem the way I see it....
1. I selected a random page.
2. I selected a random level.
3. This level was a "Popular" one. It had over 100 views and over 15 replies.
4. Not counting the signiture animations, there were 8 "other" animations on the page. Counting the sig animations, there were 19 animations on the page.
5. In my opinion, all the extra/other .gifs and .jpgs are what is making the pages slow to load and cluttered looking.

Shorty and OhBehave, many forumites love your sigs. and appreciate all your hard work.
Will you share the address of your website with the rest of us?
That way everyone will be able to understand what it is you are doing.

I hate math!

Semi techie question:

If you click on an animation and select properties you can see how big it is.....in bytes.
How do you translate bytes into kbs? (How many bytes = how many kbs?)

Thanks,
jg

1024 bytes = 1 kb

Basically, just divide by 1000 (move the decimal point left three places).

No, Patrick; please get your notation right.

1kb is a kilobit, not a kilobyte.

A kilobyte is written with a capital B. i.e kB.

Tut tut... must do better.

I haven't piped in with my opinion because, to be honest, I really don't care. There are a lot more important things to worry about than whether or not animated sigs are banned/discouraged/whatever.

That being said, I do like the animated sigs. I enjoy seeing them. I don't have a clue how to make them and just recently found out how to use them. I don't even have any really good ones yet. However, if we were asked to downsize I would find someone that could do that for me. If they were banned and we went to avatars, so be it.

It's really not a big deal either way, Patrick. People will be upset no matter what you do. You will NEVER be able to please everyone. My advice is to do what you see fit, duck to avoid the backlash, and move on. :D

Hi all! I am on dial-up and that is the only choice I have out in the country unless I want to pay an arm and a leg for satelitte broadband!! That is one reason I don't post a lot because even submitting a reply to a post takes time. I love all the sigs and animations and recognize the talent that goes into each one. Well done to everyone making them (especially Shorty and Ohbehave since it seems to me that they have done many of them)!! I do get frustrated at times and when that happens I log off and come back later to try again. I have enjoyed reading about people and getting glimpses into other wonderlanders lives. To me the pros and cons are equal and I do love the color this forum has. It is a very nice place to visit even if it takes a bit longer than I like at time! :D

Look what I've got - Kathy found her for me. I think it's an Avatar, not a sig ,
but it's got a purple hat - what more could I ask for

Image

Now I have to show my complete ingnorance: can some one tell me exactly what "avatar" means.
The actual word, and the difference between it and a sig.

And now some more ignorance. I really know very little about all this,
and have managed to add sigs to my posts by pure trial and error - and I think I've been erring on the error side.
As far as other people being able to use your sig if you had it in a gallery, they can do that now by right clicking your sig, clicking properties, and then copying the URL to their own sig. There's no way to stop that, you would just have to trust that people wouldn't use someone else's sig without their permission
This is the only way I seem to know how to do it. I made a folder on my desktop the same as I have for levels, models and houses and called it animations, but often when I go there to get one, there's nothing there that works. I do a copy/paste and there's nothing there to paste.

I realize I'm severely techno challenged and that I've probably been using sigs that maybe I shouldn't,
but how do you know these things? ? ?

HELP - Siggy/Avatar 101 needed

P.S. Can I use my little purple hat lady as a sig,
and then will she do as an avatar later? I think I really like her.

Ann: the "real" meaning of an avatar is an incarnation of god on earth, someone who would lead and teach the people and bring them toward the light.

Depending on your religion, Buddha, Jesus, Vishnu, Mohammed, could all be viewed as avatara. I first came across the word (and loved it ever since) in, yes, a video game - the 1980s RPG Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar. Ah, those were the days when I had time to sink weeks and months into a single game. ;)

On the net, an avatar is a representation of you. Simply an image you choose to represent yourself with on a bulletin board, a chat room, etc.

As a test, I will turn on the avatar upload function - you guys can try uploading avatara and see if you like it. I've set the limits to (roughly) 50k, 120x120 pixels. BUT - in the end I will not enable BOTH avatar and signatures, it'll be either one or the other. I'm just warning in advance so you don't get upset if e.g. the avatara are eliminated again next week.

Patrick
