Computer Problems - Any ideas please

Post by Superterv » Thu Dec 15, 2005 8:08 am

My computer keeps freezing and shutting down Internet Explorer - at times when I am in the middle of something. It jumps around the desk top with programmes appearing and disappearing (flickering in and out), the task bar has lept from the bottom of the screen (where it normally sits) to the top. I've done virus checks and anti-spyware. So any ideas what could be happening folks??

  I've never heard anything like it!! I'd be straight down to the computer hospital with that if it was mine.

There's an awful lot of folks having computer problems at the moment. I have a belief that computers are built with a 3 year self destruct mechanism, that's how long it takes mine to go wrong - twice now.

my husband just had the same problem with his laptop, it turned out to be an update from microsoft............go to your control panel and click on add remove programs....make sure show updates is checked, scroll near the bottom and look for windowsxp update # kb910437, uninstall it, reboot your pc and see if that works, the update worked fine on my pc but some people had problems, I'm assuming you have windowsxp... good luck

I downloaded the new updates a few days ago too. My computer started acting up right away. My spy sweeper kept opening up and then everything would freeze up, I was having to manually shut down and restart all the time. I did go back and remove that update and now everything is back to normal.
If you do uninstall it, it might present itself to be re-installed, just check the box that says "don't tell me about this update again".

I've just downloaded this update in my Automatic Updates. I install them manually so it is still sitting there. I read the blurb about it and it's an update to correct an Access Violation error that may occur with Automatic Updates and Windows Update, so presumably if you're not having trouble with those you don't need the update.

Shouldn't Microsoft be told about this problem? Has any of you reported it to them?

your right microsoft should be notified, I'll tell my hubby he needs to do that. Like a dummy he reinstalled the update and the same thing happened (he's a computer IT tech). I told him to check it on his list so it won't come up again. I do mine manually also and if it messes up my pc I uninstall it and put it on my list, not everthing from microsoft works on every pc.

And it stole my Google toolbar too!

I sent in an error report every time my computer froze up, and then sent in a detailed message. I am asuming they have gotten about a million complaints by now. So soon we should see an updated update.....

I said above that I had automatically downloaded this update but unchecked the box so it didn't install. That night when I shut down the computer it popped up again telling me that if I just click 'turn of compter' it would install then, or I could 'click here' to turn off without installing. So I 'clicked here'.

Next morning when I turned on my computer the flaming thing installed itself without even asking me, and then told me to restart my computer.

Up to now it hasn't done anything strange to me, but I 'know where it lives' if it starts giving me grief and I'll uninstall it.

I think I'll turn automatic updates off and go back to being alerted when there are things to download, that way I'm in more control of it.

I just turn the computer off at night, then reboot the next morning. Problem gone. :D
