So video game prototypes.

Post by Qloof234 » Fri Jan 01, 2010 2:05 am

I don't know if I'm the only one here who's like this, but I find any sort of cut content in video games absolutely fascinating, especially when it's something like weapons or levels.

Since I don't have much to add to the above, I'll just provide a link to a prototype page about a game that I like a lot.

Specifically, Half-Life 2.

Yeah. I enjoy experimenting with things that never made it in the final game. I have a game on my computer with several cut levels (most of which are impossible or boring) that I like going through and playing. :P

Cool!

After much hard work I managed to get HL2 Beta working on my computer. Since I was bored, and it was New Year's, I decided to play it after having a bit of vodka.

Wow, there is some very awesome stuff in there - lots of cut weapons, lots of tests, at least one cut boss... I know that I could be sitting here playing for days.

I might get a video of it on my youtube later.

Cool! I lost the Orange Box on my old hard drive when it died so I'd be happy to see the new things.

I've been exploring Super Mario Bros levels that were never intended to be in the game that are just made of garbage from in the ROM. So far I've explored around 700 garbage-y levels. On very rare occasions I would find one that's possible. :P (I've found about 8 possible levels which you can escape via Warp Zone or the 'flagpole+springboard' glitch.)

That's pretty awesome. I love how in all these retro games, any sort of data can be read for almost anything.

I was kinda bored so I wrote down a bunch of working weapons in HL2b that were cut from the final.

------------------------------------

Sniper rifle - Like the combine one in the game. The scope doesn't work yet.

AR1 - Rapid-fire weapon. No animations for it.

Molotov Cocktail - Exactly what it says. The viewmodel isn't Gordon holding a molotov, though - for some reason it's a headcrab.

Combine Guard Gun - Extremely powerful, kills almost anything in one hit. Don't stand too close, though.

Fire Extinguisher - Was to be used on the Borealis and Kraken Base chapters to put out fires. The extinguisher foam doesn't show.

Thumper - Portable Antlion repellent. Looks like a yellow Fire Hydrant.

Immolator - Seems to be a Combine flamethrower of some sort. I don't understand this one.

Ice Axe - Just like Gordon's crowbar, only faster, does less damage, and presumably was to break ice during the Borealis chapter.

Phys Gun - Ever played G-Mod? Cuz that's basically what that is. Cut for redundancy against the Gravity Gun.

"SMG2" - Another sub-machine gun type weapon. Can't remember the actual name.

Incendiary Rifle - Flare gun. Uses the AR2 model from the final game. Epic.

Sticky Launcher - Shows the default pistol. Launches "Sticky bombs" that adhere to stuff. Very cool.

Stun Baton - Just like the ones that Metrocops use in the final game. Originally to be used as a weapon. Despite how little damage it does to the player, it does massive damage to NPC's.

Hopwire Grenade - This one is apparently very unfinished and unstable from what I've heard. Once it's thrown, it floats up into the air and launches tethers everywhere. Apparently it can crash the game, though it does absolutely nothing for me.

-------------------------------

Speaking of the Hopwire, there's another interesting weapon cut from Episode 1 that's still available through the console, also known as "Hopwire":

Vortex Hopwire - EDIT: Once again, despite being warned as unstable, I've got no problems with it. Throw it, center the cursor on it, and press Primary fire (I think) to set it off. Creates a black hole that sucks NPC's and everything else towards it. Very awesome.

There are probably more cut levels/chapters/whatever in Half-Life 2 than Sonic The Hedgehog 2 - Sonic 2 has 7 separate levels that were cut from the final, but Half-Life 2's original storyline is HUGE.

Here's a summary of the final version's story, and here's a summary of the original story.

Lots of stuff.
